Things NOT to mix

I was discussing the problems resulting from mixing certain household products. I'm familiar that Chlorine bleach is dangerous when used with other cleaning agents, but someone said that Drano also causes problems when mixed with some detergents. Does anyone have the correct and complete information on how to clean a bathroom without killing myself?

Bleach and toilet bowl cleaner. Do not mix I will repeat do not mix.[xx(]

Had some bad smell in my Bathroom in the Barrack. I had just moved in to this room and could not take it. Took forever to get the Gas from the mix of those two out of that room.

They did not at that time have the warning on the label about mixing them but if you check now its there and in big bold letters.

    quote:

Bleach is made of the chemical compound sodium hypochlorite. The most commonly used chemical compound in toilet cleaners is hydrochloric acid. When these chemicals are mixed, a reaction creates toxic chloramine gases. Bleach and toilet cleaner may unintentionally be mixed by using the same cleaning cloth for multiple products, cleaning surfaces with multiple products or pouring bleach water down a drain after toilet cleaner was used.

    Time Frame

Chloramine gas is created almost instantly when bleach and toilet cleaner are mixed. Negative health effects can begin in minutes after the gas is dispersed in the air; the length of time before these negative effects occur depends on ventilation, concentration of bleach and toilet cleaner and the amount of water diluting the mixture.

..By the way, any of those drain cleaners/sanitizers are
deadly to septic systems. In town, flush whatever.

Those are of difference formulas. The statement "do not toilet bowl cleaner and bleach" is a generic statement. Many are safe, most are not, some have bleach in it. Many have hydrochloric acid in it.

Never mix bleach with acid, sulfuric or muratic (hydrochloric).

..True, but put a big balloon over the container and you have a nice
floating balloon of hydrogen. Tie it, let it go up and try to hit it
after your tracer lights. (about 25-40 yds. for a .22)

..Of course I can't confirm this harmless fun..[;)]

Toilet bowl cleaner and aluminum foil. One of my school kids a few years ago got busted for making an incendiary device in an empty plastic bottle.

I am a clean bathroom nut. Every other room in my house can be in some lesser degree of chaos, but I can't stand a bathroom that is not sparkly clean. I use scouring powder almost exclusively on anything but the floor. It has bleach, so you really don't need toilet bowl cleaner. It's a little labor intensive, but it works, and is a lot cheaper than other commercial cleaning products. My bathroom floor is granite tile, and I usually clean it with warm water and bleach.

I was just picking on ya Grumpy..[:o)]

Two things I have leaned over the years.
    1. You do not mix A-Jax and Clorox.
    2. You do not want to clean your Reynolds Wrap with Drano after a cook out.

I'm told you can make a bomb strong enough to flip a car over with Drano, aluminum, and a 1 liter pop bottle..........[:(]

..I'd add 5% sulfur to that. Potassium perchlorate is much safer
than potassium chlorate. The chlorate mix is more sensitive to
friction, impact and static electricity.....(tap the ex-pyro)
