    Barrett question.

Every so often in SGN I read about the new .416 barrett rifle. Does anyone know if it has hit the market yet? Price?

"Packaged Deals will be available to FFL dealers, exclusively through RSR Group, mid 2006."
    Suggested Retail Rrice: $ 3675
    Projectile weight 400 grains
Muzzle velocity 3250 fps.... supersonic past 2500 yards
32 or 29 inch barrel variants
50 or 45 inch overall length
    25lbs or 23 lbs.

Doesn't sound like its availible quite yet... but will be soon

just did some quick math... taking velocity squard times bullet weight to compare the energies of the 416 barret to 50 bmg....

    I didnt have the exact numbers on the 50 bmg but i think it pushes a 750 grain projectile to 2700+ fps..... 2700^2 x 750 = 5,467,500,000
call it 5,500,000,000 because im pretty sure the velocity is a little over 2700
    now the .416 barret 3250^2 x 400 = 4,225,000,000

This means the new cartridge will have about 77% the kinetic energy of the old 50 bmg. I think a .499 bmg would have been better... but I suppose this provides a somewhat intermediate caliber for those that can own 50 bmgs as well.... and may sell in places outside california as well.

I think I read they also shortened the case somewhat in addition to necking it down.... but it is still pretty potent from the looks of it

They should be making other rifles in this caliber soon.

From what I read, they developed the .416 round because it was less than .50 and it had better ballistics than the .50. I'm sure there was a lot of engineering that went into picking .416.
