Marlin or Winchester

A previous post has sparked this topic so here goes!

Which would you prefer if you were buying one of the new lever guns, a Marlin or a Winchester! Now Im not talking about the older models Im strictly talking the newer ones!

Although Im a fan of the old Winchester's, as far as the new guns are concerned I prefer the Marlins over the Winchester's any day!

How about you???

I agree with you, I do prefer the marlins to the winchester's (the new ones) but as far as the old guns, i prefer the winchester's.

Okay, I'll chime in on this one. I like the Winchesters, they just have that classic look. They are the originals.

I can't believe someone would even ask a question like this! Who in their right mind would even THINK for a minute about buying a Marlin over a WINCHESTER? I am so tiffed off, I think I might just have to leave this board! Don't know if I can get along with a bunch of Marlin lovin' folks. [:p]

JUST KIDDING! I do love old Winchesters, but Pa, the way you phrased your question about new guns, I have to shamefully bow my head and mumble, "Marlin." God forgive me! [8D]

I have had my eye on the Marlin Alaskan Guide Gun for awhile. Can't say any new Winchester lever guns have caught my eye lately

I honestly can't make a blanket statement, I've owned and enjoyed the merits of each. I think it really boils down to this for me: If I intend to scope it I prefer Marlins. As far as looks and appeal I still lean toward Winchester. Also I'm a tad more inclined toward Winchester now that they have the tang safety. On the other hand for a big bore I prefer Marlins...Like I said I can't say[:D][:D]

As far as the earlier comment about fit and finish, I disagree. If you look at the average Winchester's wood and the average Marlin's wood you'll buy a Winchester, Marlin's coarse checkering sucks.

I don't see where there is an issue puting a scope on a new Winchester with angle eject. I have one on mine and it works just fine.

Looks like this has pretty much all been said, but I do have one point.[:)]

First of all I must admit that I am a big Winchester Model 94 guy. I have had both (actually, I guess I do have one Marlin now, a .30-30). But I am less and less impressed with the workmanship on the newer Winchesters ... might even make me switch![V]

But why go with the new ones![:D][:D] You can still get plenty of good/old Winchesters on the GB auction! Don't mess with perfection ... keep on buyin' and usin' the oldies and goodies![8D]

Oh, yes, if you want to mount a scope, just stick with the Winchester Model 94 AE's![:p]

It's not a technical issue scoping a Winchecter, I just prefer a scoped Marlin with the pistol grip stock. I had a scoped angle eject pre safety .44 mag that shot excellent groups. I just think a scope looks more "at home" on a Marlin.

Winchester.... sorry it's just a hard habit to break.

Just to ask.. what caliber and what purpose would it be for?
And if it is new do I have to hide it so the pre-64's don't get mad.

Thinking about this again I remembered that when faced with this decision in the past I bought four lever guns and all four were for different purposes. Here is what I ended up buying in the order I acquired them.

Winchester 94 -30/30 - My 30th birthday present to myself
Rossi Puma Model 92 -44 Mag - Took a black bear with this one
    Marlin 336 -30/30 - Shoots MOA
Browning BLR lightning -22-250 - My coyote killer

I have grown fond of them all.

    Chuck...

I will put my gun safe full of old Winnies up against any of your Marlins anyday... and when it comes time to sell them, wanna take any bets on which one of us will walk away with a fatter wallet[?][:0][^] Marlin has played second fiddle to Winchester for over 120 years... and I don't see it changing anytime soon[:)]

I handled a Winchester 30-30 and a Marlin. I thought the Marlin's fit, finish, and function were better and smoother. I bought the Marlin and would buy another one in a heartbeat.

This thread is about NEW lever guns. Of course, the pre-64 Winchester lever guns are more valuable than a Marlin of comparable condition and age, but, if I was in the market for a new rifle, it would be a Marlin and I think the Marlins of today are going to hold their value as well as the modern Winchesters.

Woodshermit: I tried to make that clear in my initial thread, guess some either misunderstood or can't read! I too would choose one of the older Winchesters over a Marlin, but as far as the newer ones go, the Winchesters just ain't got it!!! Plain and simple!

It is a shame, I wish the new Winchesters would return to the quality that they were in the past!!!

Somebody mentioned Winchester's tang safety and that they like it, which is fine if you think you need a safety on a lever gun. Personally, the first time I saw a tang safety on anything other than a double barrel shotgun, I wondered if a committee hadn't made a decision to see what they could do to make the 94 ugly.

There are some fine old Marlin lever guns out there, including 22s, and they bring a premium price if in excellent condition.
