Well this weekend wasn't so fun. We learned my nephew who is in the Army Reserves is being deployed to Iraq(he thinks Mosul) in about 20 days. He is a great kid -if 26 is a kid-he is a very hard working guy and just proposed to his girlfriend. I was looking around online about Mosul and at least to me that place still does not look like it is under control. Have any of you guys been there? This is his first time in combat as well so he is nervous which is totally understandable.

Tell him to keep his head down and I'll be praying for him.

Its my understanding that Mosul is one of the better places to be stationed.

The Kurds are the one ethnic group in Iraq that seems to genuinely like us.

My nephew's base is Mosul. He is in a (regular Army) Stryker Unit that operates out of there. My son was stationed in Baghdad and is headed back in 45 days. Last time their Airborne Unit operated around that area. This time, he is with the 25th Inf. He won't tell me where he goes most of the time. Tours have been between 12-18 months. To me, over there is "over there" and (contrary to some's belief), it isn't a cake walk. Tell him to keep his head down and come back home safely.

My son said the only reserves he encountered were in units in Kuwait and at the medical facility in Balad, but i guess that really depends on what his MOS is....

Ahh... Mosul. Lovely place. Make sure he checks out the Mosque where jonah is supposedly buried on the east side. Oh, and stay away from the intersection of ISUZU and BUICK.

mosul is good place to get stationed. Well ok no place over place to be stationed but you know what i mean. And yes it depends on mos, im a grunt back in states for national guard and im doing convoy security. But mosul is good, but it all depends on how they migrating to. Just be glad its not afghanistan. My motto is "shoot straight, run fast, leave everything else to the counselor in 17 years." Also dragonskin isnt designed for extreme environments so i dont know why you would want him to have it.

I have been following the Dragon Skin controversy a little and at least to me-it looks like there is a rivalry between them and Interceptor and who the military is deciding to use. 9 Generals who are using it in Afghanistan would have some sway for me--plus seeing it on tv stopping 7.62x39 ammo. I guess I am a little biased as it is also made in my old home town of Fresno[:D]

ya no matter what the testing they do they cant replicate what its going to do after a few months here. You know the normal wear and tear on equipment in a combat zone. Ive read some of the stuff to on it and watched some specials about it. The glue that holds the plates together doesnt stand up in extreme temperatures and causes the little plates to fall off. But ive not seen any extra attachments to it, and as of right now their is like 5 extra added protection attachments to the current body armor i have.

How much gear do you guys carry around on any given day in the city? You guys have the toughest job in the world-dealing with the bad guys in that heat with all that gear. Too bad some company hasn't come up with climate controlled clothing--if they can put heaters in car seats you think they could make that work to heat or cool you guys.

well i do convoy security so its not as bad as some of the groundpounders. But my vest is pretty heavy you got front and black plates, then you got the two side plates, then you got a groin protector shoulder protectors (dont wear) neck and throat protectors, then you got a kidney protector. On my vest i carry 3 3mag pouchs from tactical tailor. Caribiner belt cutter knife and gerber. Then you add in weapon and helmet. I know i gain about 30-40 lbs with just the vest alone cause of the side plates, not including allt he stuff i got on it and the helmet. And the marine corp came out with a combat shirt thats alot cooler and you can wear under the body armor and dont have to wear the uniform top. Then the army came out with it, but with specific guidelines that its to only be worn on mission and no wear else.
