My wife likes the TLC channel program "Mysteries of the ER". Kind of real life version of "House".
Yesterday they had an interesting one. Kid starts have convulsions. Doc's figure out it's due to tape worms in his brain from eating raw pork. Only the kid is Jewish and doesn't eat ANY pork.
They finally figure out it came from their latino immigrant housekeeper. They said:
A: These people are LOADED w/these worms.
B: The worms are Transmited person to person by poor hygene. And infected persons crap is loaded w/worm eggs. Then if they don't wash their hands good, and then come into contact w/you OR YOUR FOOD, the eggs get passed on.
C. These immigrants routinely practice poor hygene.
In the kids affluent Jewish community, latino housekeepers were common. So they tested everyone. Many people of the community (as I recall, 60+ people) unknowingly had aquired the worms from their immigrant help.
All families fired their immigrant help, who moved on before receiving treatment. According to the program, this tape worm is spreading across the country. Mostly in states w/high latino immigrant populations (West coast/Southwest).
Kind makes you wonder about eating in places where you see latino immigrants working, doesn't it?
