This is a shame!!!

SAN RAFAEL - The 13-year-old son of a former Cibola County sheriff was shot to death during an accident authorities say occurred when he and a friend were hunting prairie dogs.

Salvador Benavidez, son of former Sheriff Salvador Benavidez Sr., was pronounced dead at Cibola General Hospital in Grants after the shooting May 13.

Undersheriff Felix Savaadra says the middle school student was shot once in the upper left chest while hunting on his family's San Rafael property.

Savaadra says the district attorney will review the case, but that the sheriff's office has no plans to file charges.

The Gallup Independent reports investigators determined the boy was shot at close range with a .22-caliber rifle when the second child was loading it and it accidentally discharged.
