Door Speaker Access: 2000 Chevy Pickup

The bass speaker in the door of my 2000 Silverado is vibrating. I want to fix it or replace it.

It LOOKS as though one should be able to just pop the speaker grille off rather than remove the entire door panel.

Rather than try it and risk damaging something, I will wait for someone who has done this before to tell me the correct procedure.

This is all factory stuff, no aftermarket components.

Thanks

David, since you're a cop you probably know someone in the Auto Body & Paint business. Stop by and ask them how to get it off.

If it's vibrating, the paper part is probably broken and you'll have to replace it. Stock speakers are lots more expensive than aftermarket ones, and you can get better speakers aftermarket than stock.

Nunn, Not sure on yours, but most are held on with push in clips so the cover it should pop off. This will expose the mounting screws. If you pull it out, use care not to rip a plastic sheet cover behind it. This protects the speaker from water. Lots of things can cause the vibration, loose mounting screws, broken cone(the paper part James mentioned) wires laying on the cone, loose door panel, etc. Chevy is using Bose speakers on their newer models and I think they make a replacement for yours.

What I need to know, for sure:

    1. Can I remove the speaker grille without removing the door panel?

    2. If so, how is it held on?

With friction clips, pry it out with a thin blade screw driver,(use one on each side) but be carefull to pull it straight out. They have a nasty habit of the plastic studs breaking off if you get one side out farther than the other.

I had a similar problem with my '99 Silverado. Getting the metal speaker panel off was no problem. Just pry it off carefully as described before. However, I found that the mounting brackets were actually INSIDE the door panel. The speakers have posts on the sides of them that go through holes in the speaker mount in the door panel. They're held in the door panel by plastic clips that go over the posts. (on the inside of the door panel) I ended up going to the dealer to have them take the door panel off and put the speaker in. If I'd have done it, I would have screwed up the window or something worse! The stock speakers are pretty cheap. (the 3 1/2'' speaker cost about $30 from the dealer) If you have no problem getting the door panel off, then it'll just cost you the price of the speaker.

ALL of the trucks I work on require the door panel to be removed to get the speaker out. On the new chevy's to take the door panel off you normally removed the screws that are on it, pop with window crank clip off and pull the door panel off.....some of these new chevy's require you to 'LIFT' the doorpanel off as it has plastic hooks that hook down onto the door panel.

I learned that the hard way. broke an expensive plastic door panel.
