Nice buck. They are on my list of animals I would like to take. Long shot? Usually are for them, from what I understand. I think I have seen the name of the outfitters before. On tv maybe? Congrats.

Thanks Kurt,..I appreciate that a lot. Sony Imagestation just doesn't seem to upload any of my pics[?][?] I may try mailing them to myself and loading them from work on the faster computer.

bsally,..we crawled to the top of a ridgeline we had hidden the truck behind,..and spotted a nice herd at ~975yds (leica 1200). The guide said there is a nice buck in that bunch. We located a draw running down the ridge into the prairie below. We used the draw for about 200yds,..then had to take to belly crawling for about another 300yds (gotta love those cactus[B)]) all the while the does had the buck headed closer to us. At 407yds he was getting nervous so I had to take the shot. Leaning into the shooting sticks and with my right arm propped against the guides shoulder,..I let one go. I heard the bullet hit and saw him run in a circle such as whitetail do when hit and just before the fall. I had hit low on the shoulder/leg area (still not complaining for mostly offhanded at 407yds) and was instantly distraught that he was wounded and not expired. The guide told me to relax (after rnds 2-5 were fired out to ~650yds,..yeah right!! off shooting sticks no less[:(])and that he had never lost an animal. The stalk continued through the cactus and greesewood briars while crawling for about another 300yds. At this point we found a small creek/draw and used it to gain some ground. Then as it was no longer providing any ground,..we started the crawl again for about another 150yds. At 171yds,..he was air mailed his invitation to the big desert prarie beyond. That stalk covered some 1000+yds from start to finish and I am still nursing the bruises on my knees almost 2 weeks later. It makes for one great story to go with the mount however.

as far as the guides/owners,..I met them at the Harrisburg PA show last year. Ralph is laid back and seems to be very honest. His wife Lenora provides breakfast and dinner (home style cooking and plenty of it[:p]) I beleive this is their 6th year of guiding and they lease 200,000 acres on various ranches. It's nice to hunt many different peices of ground and see that much more of the country.

rugster,..that is one of the ONLY times I have seen land like that[:0] Here on the east coast,..we sure don't have anything even remotely like that. I WILL BE going back[:D]

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

My god... I would love to hunt that country, look like nothing to it, just kick back, relax, and watch the acres, deffiently different to up here in Maine, where you gotta keep looking down to make sure you don't step in a swamp, on a fallen tree, or trip over a sneaky root.

By the way, nice kill on that buck, he looks happy to have his picture taken.[:D]

It would be a dream come true for me to just walk on that land. Looks beautiful unlike my current and somewhat permament surroundings.
