I recently picked up a Marlin 336 A waffle top {suffix G} in mint condition. Chambered in 30-30. I only paid $225.00 for it total. Gorgeous rifle. Much tighter than my 1894 Winnie and I paid much less for it. I'm a sucker for levers and exposed hammers however. They both have their merits. [:)][8D]

I've a Mossberg 472 PCA in 30-30cal and has been a great shooting gun for the last 15yrs.

You've been given some good optins now it's time to ante-up and roll the dice.

Try finding a Marlin 30TK. It's a short, compact carbine that handles great and very accurate with 18.5" barrel. I have one and I love it. If you can't find the TK, try tracking down a Texan model. You WILL NOT regret it.

My favorite lever is the Model 88 Winchester. I have two. The price has risen so much, could probably buy two to three marlins.

    Make that a pre-Remington Marlin.

I'll be damned...from four words you can tell that much. Amazing!

    Yup.
You painted a pretty broad stroke about "garbage gun" and "garbage round".
After well over 100 years of killing more deer than any other round and fired from the iconic 1894 Winchester, Various Marlins, and of course the 1899 Savage. If you think those guns were garbage.......well, you certainly no little to nothing about them.

    I know....exactly the reason I am getting one. [:)]

I have hunted with my grandpa's old 30-30 many times in the thick WI brush. I want one for myself for the same reasons.

IN my humble opinion I wouldn't buy a Win or Marlin UNLESS it was built pre 1978. Have owned a Marlin 36 which is heavier than the Win 94 and it was a nice lever gun but ended up trading for a Remington 700 25-06 then sold that when we inherited 2 Win 94's. One was a 1968 and well used and the other a 1979 NIB and still had the Target sales tag on the lever. I'd probably go Marlin if I was in the market but the 94 is no slouch either. The .30-30 is a great all purpose round.

Both have some character to them.

It's a fun gun. Bought that one used off the Auction Side. Still need to strip the black paint of the stocks and refinish them.

+2. I also have a Glenfield. I have owned it (it was used when I bought it) for over 20 years. I gave a $100 bill for it. Some of the best money I ever spent on a rifle.
