I am not sure if this photo has been photo shopped. My first thoughts are I don't know if an oil pipe line would be under this kind of pressure to cause oil to spill out in this fashion... Thoughts?

It's heated and pretty thin, going through that line.It could very well be a real photo..

well oil or any other liquid flows without force. So all pipelines have some degree of pressure. Oil lines tend to go for hundreds of miles, so it would require a bit of force to move their weight of oil through a pipeline that is 250 miles long.

So I say it is possible, however, I say it is photochopped because with that much pressure, I think the oil would spontaneously combust. Think about this for second: When is the last a pipeline leak made the news? Is it not always a pipeline explosion?

just me thinking out loud. what do I know...

and on a second note, why would the pipeline be above ground when they have unlimited room to bury it? It doesn't appear to be in a area with a rock basin and I thought pipelines gained strength from the ground pressure?

A native guy shot a hole in the pipe with a 338 Win mag. It sprayed thousands of gallons of oil out of the hole going about 100 feet in a stream.

It's over permafrost and the greenies don't want it thawed. The oil is heated and burying the pipeline would guarantee that it settled at different rates, causing cracks.
If that was JP-5, the static caused by spraying/atomizing it would touch it off. That however is "Sweet" crude. Not affected so much by static.

I am not sure were the photo was taken. An environmental movement is distributing it as a case study against oil pipe lines.

Maintenance and corrosion are problems with the buried sections of the pipe, Atigan pass has had problems for years. The permafrost will tend to push pipes right up out of the ground too. Bethel AK has all of its water and sewer lines above ground for just that reason.

    Yes it can happen.

High pressure Natural Gas Line in Ohio. The blast created a 30-foot-wide by 15-foot-deep crater and was felt over 12 miles away.

    So what! Are you worried?

You do know this is the Alaska Pipeline, right? Aleaska Corp built it.

Do you know what a "plug" is? This is a 'plug' blowout.

Please don't sign up with PETA, these are the images they love to tout.

What you see is a nitrogen blow off on a station on a petroleum change. No big deal.

I have no worries. Just curious as to whether it was real or photo shopped. You should read the whole thread...
