I am not a plumber by a long shot , but I use Teflon tape on all threaded joints except compression joints of course

It depends on if their is a worry of the joint compound fouling valve parts/ components.
When in doubt use tape only.

I have used both the Teflon dope and the tape together with 100% success. Use the dope sparingly if you have already taped it.

A plumber advised me that the dope is more reliable than the tape I've used both
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

    Depends on the fitting's thread.

If it is NPT {tapered pipe threads} by all means use something!!

If it is a compression type, NO, Nothing !!

If it is a flared fitting, NO, nothing.

Basically, if it gets tighter the more you turn, use a sealer.
If it tightens against a seat or angled lip, NO sealer.

See that "equal brass tee", sealer on the pipe side, nothing on the flare sides.

I worked in a boiler plant and we would often use both tape and dope. However, you tighten to where you want it, don't ever back it up. It will leak.

I'm replacing my well pressure tank
and I don't want leaks because I'll have
    disassemble the whole manifold assembly.
I replaced one in the old house ,no problems
but I can't remember how I sealed the pipe threads.
By the way I used to do cold plate design and there is
a pipe thread NPTJ IIRC that is an interference fit
(crushes one thread over another) that is not
    supposed to leak...Don't believe it.
