Got this story from a guy on an elk hunting forum. He found this carnage while elk hunting in Montana back in 2009.
Reported his findings to the local pd and found out that a ranch hand while out checking on range cattle and mending fencing surprised a sow grizzly with cubs and was attacked and mauled.
Wasn't hurt that bad, he had to walk back to his truck because his horse and pack horse ran off and were never found until this elk hunter found some of the gear pictured below.

After the guy on GB had a sad good by about his eminent death then riding his horse one last time, sheesh.... this story and pics could be fake/staged for all I know.

And it's almost dark. Now what?

As I see it, there are two possibilities: Either somebody got hissef 'et, or (more likely if what I see in the first pic is a horse pad) a pack horse ran away and then rolled its pack off.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

That looks like a Marlin 1885 in 45-70 or 444 with the butt stock broken off.

It looks like there was a horse or horses, what happened to them. did they get away or were they killed and eaten while tied up.

Is there a story to this?

I'm on a smart phone so no big monitor to enlarge photos.

Back in my SAR years I would radio it in and photograph the scene and look for tracks or other sign. While I never found a gun, I have encountered such scenes before.

If that's a cell phone in the picture it could hold vital clues. Even if the battery is dead and the phone soaked by rain, data may be recoverable. It has been done before.

Otherwise careful examination of items found would reveal much and help determine 8f further action is needed. Beyond bagging the trash, cleaning the gun and replacing the stock.

take a second to see if it's fresh and someone needs a rescue-911. otherwise get away before it is dark.

come back the next day. get a better idea if it's old or new.

if it's new, the dude may be around. may come back later or on a few days. come back next week and check again.

if it's old, see if it looks like it was an abandoned campsite or a pile of junk. did something happen to the owner? find out who it was and either they get their stuff back, or they were missing and the sheriff knows about it.

It looks like a prank to me. If something tore off a leg, there would be blood. I don't see any blood.

Either that or the pack horse theory, but that doesn't explain the pant leg.

Did U look for a wallet/billfold? Could be ID in that junk somewhere.I would have at the very least pulled the junk in the stream out and pile it near by...EERIE SCENE,for sure..
I would agree that if it were a bear attack, that gear would surely have evidences of blood spatter or be actually soaked in blood.

I might pick up small things like a wallet and the cell phones, and even the rifle, and take it back for the cops to figure out. Just in case it was a griz, I sure as hell wouldn't hang out there long. He could come back.
A friend of mine back in the 70's came across something like that up in Glacier Park, in Montana. Some torn clothing and a wallet. He walked a bit further upstream and found what the griz had left of a young man and woman. He beat feet out of there and found the nearest ranger station. He told me that was the spookiest situation he had ever been in. While trekking out, he was watching every bush and tree expecting to meet the bar. [:)]

I lean toward the runaway horse theory with the pack and saddle eventually being lost.

I have found scenes of expensive backpacking or car camping gear abandoned. Looking as if someone stood up out of a sleeping bag and walked away. At times these scenes lead to the discovery of a suicide.

There was the case of a lady poet who went to sit nude in the moonlight seeking inspiration. She lost her way trying to return to her campsite. We found her several days later, alive but in poor shape.

Runaway pack animal. Best guess is the rifle was in the scabbard butt forward and it got hung up on a tree or something. That would explain a broken stock. In turn that may have broke the girth or cinch. The pack fell off and the critters tore thru it looking for food. I doubt bears or criminal activity there.

Take those pictures and the cell phone, and report it to the nearest sheriff office or park ranger. Then give them the coordinates to the location or take them there. Might be a reward or you might get someone their stuff back. Oakie

    I must have poor eyesight.
I don't see a rifle ,pant leg or fence tool.
I just see a pan, backpack ,what appears to be
a horse blanket or pad ,rope and plastic sheathing
    and litter.

I think 2 legged predators. too neat a mess for an animal. that gps unit might tell you where its been and give an idea who might it belong to.
