Update on my potentially homeless client...

Turns out, as of a rather lengthy meeting this morning with the housing authority, that they are NOT going to evict him!!!

Housing Authority agreed to give him "another chance" to work on whatever perceived issues they were using as grounds to evict him. He will be placed on a bi-weekly schedule for cleanliness inspections, for the next 60 days. We, his support staff, will visit weekly, some staff daily, and will take pictures, before and after, if there are any issues.

First off, we agreed that as property manager, she has the right to expect cleanliness. However, we pointed out to her, that due to our client's limitations, his ability to "clean" is dictated by his ability to function. When he is doing well, he cleans, when he is not doing well, or is stressed, his ability to do so falls to the wayside. And afterall, he is not disruptive, he doesn't harass people, most of the folks at the apartment know him to be the good guy that he is. He's just a big, scary-looking mentally ill and retarded guy, but if you take the time to get to know him, he's really just a 6 y/o kid in a man's body.

Turns out, the apartment has been positively abuzz about this guy's eviction, and the unfairness of it. After we gathered a little information, and pointed out to our esteemed property manager that she made comments of the same effect to several of our staff members, the ones about her "changing the image" of the complex, about a couple other of our client's getting evicted, she first denied saying it, then backed down. It was priceless to see the look on her face.

So, we are no longer in fear of him getting evicted. On the other hand, he is not happy about being someplace he does not feel welcome, and I don't blame him for that. We are looking into other options for housing. But in the meantime, he will continue to have a roof over his head.

Yeah!!! Score one for the "good guys"...!

God ,I feel bad for people like that. I`m glad he still has his place to stay, but keep a close eye as I`m betting managment will try another angle to get rid of him.

No doubt. He he's already "on edge," and he has a diagnosis of Intermittent Explosive D/O, and anything that can be considered "threatening behavior" is grounds for immediate eviction. I've tried talking to the guy about this, told him if he felt he was getting harassed to just walk away, tell them to call me or his other staff, don't lash out by any means.

I am so glad you are helping this guy out.

I have a brother who is in welfare housing. He is a big giant guy, too, although he is not retarded.
God bless people like you who help people like this, they have no pull and they don't contribute to society, but they are human beings.
