Is dsl really THAT much faster? I'm not real smart on computers, but I've got one of those turbo dial up plans for $11 and it's about as fast as I could want.

I have to say that (depending on ISP) DSL is 10 - 20 times faster than dial up. of course the DSL around here wasnt fast enough so I went to cable, and the nice guys that they are just doubled my speed this weekend.[:D]

Ive been using dsl for a few years now, and I cant live without it. I refuse to use a dial up connection now. One piece of advise is to get a firewall, and good antivirus protection. Since your computer is "online" whenever it is on, it is open to hackers, and you WILL be attacked.

Currently on dial-up. Slow as heck. I'm getting cable as soon as they get it on-line. Maybe next week. It's supposed to be 30 times faster. Plus it free's up the phone line.

A webpage documenting my DSL / Cable speed. It is still linked to the site I used for the original test 2 years ago.

    http://www.websoft2000.com/roadrunner_speed.htm

    My opinion:
DSL has ONEadvantage over cable: You get full time internet PLUS a telephone on one line. Business can install the DSL system on existing lines.

    What I THINK has happened:
Roadrunner cable was "FAST",,, I mean really fast in late 2001. Then,, it started "slowing up",,, no,, not more users,, the cable company started limiting "speed". Some were "abusing" the system, massive down/up loads,, commercial use etc. Newer modems had the speed severly limited. My cable had gone from the 3.00 megbit + to 1.4 in about a year.

NOW I think cable is returning to the original speed. Probably a combination of "necessary" and technology improvement.

I spend a lot of time where 56K is the best I can get and it runs at 30K in the afternoons but slows down a little early evenings !!!! No way I can get anything else and the "accelerated" systems are not available.

Very distressing... thinking about it makes me want to go smoke a cig. No,, I quit,, need to hit the bathtub for a cold one. This killed a little time.

After you get the DSL connection go to this website:

    http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/BandwidthResults.asp

    And check your connection speed.

You will never go back to dial-up, just like you would never go back to a 286 computer. You will download 4 to 6 meg files without even thinking about it.

You must have a fire wall program. Here is is one of the best, and it's free(ZoneAlarm):

I have dial up, but would like to have dsl. Where do you get dsl for $30 a month? I see plans that only last 5 or 6 months then go to the original cost of $40 or $50...

Once you go cable high speed, you never go back. Anything that is less than instant has me yelling at the computer to hurry the **** up! I don't even have cable T.V. But I've got cable internet access and a computer in every room.
