'Mysterious voice' led Utah Officers to child who survived for 14 hours in submerged car

Jennifer Groesbeck, 25, died in a car accident Friday night in Spanish Fork, Utah. Her 18-month-old daughter Lily was found 14 hours later and is listed in critical condition.

The officers who rescued a Utah toddler from death's doorstep in a submerged car on Sunday said their adrenaline-fueled heroics were triggered by a mysterious plea.

"We could see a person in the front seat and then we heard a voice saying, `Help me, we're in here.' It was clear as day," said Officer Tyler Beddoes of the Spanish Fork Police Department, one of four men who pulled an unconscious 18-month-old from a car - which had been submerged in near-freezing water for 14 hours - as her mother lay dead in the driver's seat.

Beddoes and his fellow first responders braved the chilly waters long enough to turn the red Dodge sedan, which was upside down, and pull little Lily Groesbeck out of her car seat, in which she had been suspended since her mother Jennifer Groesbeck apparently lost control of the car the previous evening.

"We could see her eyes fluttering so there was some life but as far as movements or consciousness there was nothing that we could see," Beddoes told the Daily News on Monday.

The four officers and three firefighters formed an assembly line and transported the child back to shore. The first responders started performing CPR, and Lily later regained consciousness in a Salt Lake City hospital. Her condition was upgraded to stable on Monday.

Jennifer Groesbeck, 25, was driving to her home in Springville, but when crossing a bridge in Spanish Fork, the single mom hit a cement barrier and drove off the roadway, police said.

The vehicle crashed into the river around 10:30 p.m., according to a witness who told police he heard the accident. The car was not visible from the roadway, and was not discovered until 14 hours later, when a fisherman spotted it at 12:24 p.m. Saturday and called police.

That's when Beddoes and his partners arrived. The witness told them that he could see an arm through the window, and the four men plunged into the freezing rapids to see if they could find any survivors.

Then, suddenly, they started hearing the distinct sound of a woman's voice, calling to them to help.

We heard a voice saying 'help me, we're in here.' It was clear as day.
"We replied back `hang in there, we're trying what we can.' "

The voice motivated them to push harder because they believed there may be someone inside who was still alive. With their adrenaline pumping they pulled the heavy, water-filled car onto its side and discovered the driver was dead.

The officers had no explanation for the mysterious voice that appeared to come from inside the car. Beddoes said he said he wouldn't believe it really happened had not the other officers heard it, as well.

"I don't know what I thought I heard," he said. "I'm not a typically religious guy. It's hard to explain - it was definitely something. Where and why it came from, I'm not sure."

The little girl was hanging upside down, but her head was not touching the water. The responders did not even see her, initially, but when they got the car turned over they spotted her and raced to get her out.

The child was being treated at Primary Children's Hospital, where a her condition was "stable and improving," a spokeswoman said Monday.

"She is doing remarkably well considering the circumstance. The doctors have been hopeful so far," Sanderson told reporters. "We would like to express our appreciation to the Spanish Fork rescue team for saving the baby's life."

Beddoes, who spent at least 20 minutes in the frigid waters, said he and his colleagues were so focused on the rescue they didn't realize the impact it was having on their bodies. The 6-foot-tall officer said the water level was often at his neck, sometimes higher.

"I didn't feel the cold - I wasn't paying attention to myself," he said. "After several minutes in the water I started to feel the effects."

Police are still investigating what may have caused Groesbeck to drive off the bridge.

The four officers and three firefighters were treated for hypothermia and released Saturday night.

The men who jumped into the water to save the infant should be commended, Johnson said.

"It's a very courageous effort on their part," he added. "They were willing to risk their lives and enter the water to make sure there were no other occupants in the vehicle. This is what public service is all about."

Remarkable things happen with no explanation as to how or why.
All I have to offer is that there is reason for the remarkable things that happen.
I need not know the how or why... Just the fact that they do.

Very hopeful that the little girl will fully recover.

My hat's off to those who braved the elements to do what they do best.

    Interesting video.

I heard an interview with one of the firemen, he said it was clearly the voice of an adult and not a child.
I think the spirit of the dead mother was calling to the firemen to rescue her baby.

no doubt about it...i have had a few strange events over the years and believe many simply do not notice these brief encounters outside normal reality

Cool story, but not necessarily mysterious...

The writer left a big hole in this story by neglecting to state how long mom appeared to have been dead.

Based on what he does tell us she could've still been alive and verbalizing as the rescuers approached.

There it is!!! I knew we'd have one that couldn't believe something like that could happen.

My scientific mind does not want to believe this.

    BUT....

The unexplained does happen. I would not call them officers liars.

2 years ago I opened the door and let a cat into my friends house while they were on vacation. When I told them, they looked at me funny. They don't have a cat that color, and it has never been found..

This is the same house where they have seen an old man walk into a closet, and also seen him standing in the kitchen.

Don't talk about it much, but we lived in a haunted house when I was little. It is the home I have the most vivid and intense memories of, bar none.

There have been other instances in adulthood. Enough to believe there is something more, whatever it may be, that is beyond physical existence.

Yup, lived in a similar house as a young kid. A few years back me, my mother, and my uncle were chatting about that creepy house and each mentioned occasionally catching a glimpse of a woman sitting on the couch smoking a cigarette. Was weird that all three of us had seen the same thing over the years...then my dad overheard and mentioned he had seen it several times as well. There's a lot of stuff in this world that science and evangelical atheism can't explain.

Txs it was established that the mother was killed in the wreck, had been dead for 12 hours.
If not, you know those firemen would have started CPR, a fireman never passes up a chance to do CPR.

I had a disembodied voice give me instructions, once. I'm not the type to hear disembodied voices, much less do what they say, so I ignored it - shook it off. Then the voice repeated himself, and even said he was having to repeat himself. My hair stuck straight out, and I did exactly what he said, even though at the moment it was completely senseless. Within less than a minute, what I did saved my life, and the lives of two other soldiers who were with me. Those two looked at me bug-eyed for a month, as if I could see the future.

This kind of a testimony can be made only at least semi-anonymously, because of the number of secularists who will jump down your throat over their 'fact' that there is no such thing as a disembodied voice.

Yeah, that same voice has saved my life a couple times as well. Nothing is weirder than hearing that voice say "stop, don't go that way" and hearing gunshots a couple seconds later.

I don't have to understand why to believe that this happened.

Even the fireman said he is not a strong believer but he has no doubt he heard something.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

    Mass hysteria.

They saw a woman's arm and convinced one another they heard voices.

Probably should cut down on the amount of pot being smoked at the firehouse.

Great story, though, and as happy a result as could be hoped for.

If they heard it, it happened. We have no right to judge them as we weren't there. They believe so I do as well.

I live not too far from the bridge and drive over it a few times each week. Not hard to see how the vehicle went unnoticed for a long time. No development to east of the bridge where she went off and into the water. Sad event but with a bittersweet ending.

    Got a nibble.

I don't use green font, so sometimes these misunderstandings happen.

People are looking for a logical answer to this mystery that does not involve something supernatural or beyond basic understanding. My post was a reaction to that line of thinking. It is a fools errand, to try to explain this via something you can reach out and touch.

Too much is reported outside of what can be termed the 'normal realm', IMO for it all to be fiction.

For all four to hear the 'voice' means something happened. No one knows what it was, but one almost has to assume it was something external to the officers.

Don, it was the pot smoking comment that caught my eye. Those guys spent almost a half an hour in ice water trying to make a rescue. Motivated by whatever reason, natural or not, they pushed on until the rescue was made, and if I read the article correct there were rapids involved. And I don't nibble, if ya wanna fish, try getting in the water yerself

Rapids don't exist on the Spanish Fork River. It has a depth of a few feet at most during normal flows and a width of not much. I fish it with my boys and catch small browns. Spring runoff will increase the flow but it is more accurately described as a stream. The Mississippi River it is not. The photo below shows the bridge just north of the T-intersection where she went in; right side (east) of the bridge.

One of the rescuers had a body cam or something, because I saw a video of the rescue a while back. Pretty jerky camerawork, of course, but it showed the popped air bag, the deceased woman's arm, them turning the vehicle, and the youngster getting cut loose, handed out and rushed to shore. No one said anything about a voice, and that segment of the story has been absent after the first day or so. I saw a later video with the child and the father, and the recovery has been remarkable.
