2nd Place in Chili Contest!

..Not a sanctioned event, but my wife entered me in a contest where she works. I really didn't expect to place at all but she just called and said I won 2nd out of over 20 entries. Not to shabby.
..They're selling cups and bowls to employees and it doesn't look like there will be any to bring back home...[:(] I'd like to enter local contests but they all require that everything be cooked onsite. I can't do that because my beef roasts need to cook low and slow for 5-6 hours the day before. Oh well...my moment of fame..[:D]

If you have the best chili you have the best chili. A sanctioned event doesn't make it taste any better. You're right to not degrade your chili to win ribbons.

    CONGRATULATIONS! [:)]

My wife told me Chili and Soup season here is over, when I asked why she said because it is getting too hot. I guess it is like wearing Seer sucker after labor day?
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

..I tried measuring and writing it down once. It just didn't work.
A list of ingredients, sure, but amounts keep getting adjusted all
the way through the process. I'll tell you that the first thing to
go in the Dutch oven is finely minced bacon and much later, Heinz
chili sauce. A cast iron Dutch oven is a must.

Same here with my Lasagna recipe. I believe chili and most Italian
dishes are great, not because of what's in them, But rather how you put them together.[:p][:p]

..I'll certainly take that as a compliment! Thanks. My wife said
that there were a lot of Mexicans entered also. At least it was
a blind judging panel. They didn't know who made what. I make
mine pretty mild to appeal to Anglos. If anyone wants to add heat,
they can do it at the table...[;)]

I took a 3rd place last winter. Do you use "plum tomatoes"? Just curious[;)]

I do the same thing, Bob & Dale. When I moved out of Indy in '82 to some acreage I started growing tomatoes, a variety of peppers, and other things. I began making salsa and have a log for almost 30 years of each little change in the recipe. Then evaluate each in the fall.

..You betcha. Home grown, peeled and canned whole. A few of the varieties are San Marzano, Roma, Burpee Super Sauce and whatever
strikes my fancy. If store bought, I like the Red Gold brand. I
chop them but leave big enough pieces so you know they are there.
..I used a big rump roast and a small eye of round. Hate to admit
to it but I use one of those oven bags that come with a "pot roast"
    seasoning packet...[:I]
