Why on earth would a 62 year old man put himself in such a position that he could end up in the federal pen for 10 years? What is the big attraction to a sawed off shotgun that would tempt this man to risk ruining his life? Please see excerpt below.

A Mountain Grove man has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges he illegally possessed two sawed-off shotguns, said Todd P. Graves, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri.

William Earl Gates, 62, owner of the Marshfield-based Gator's Pawn, was set for trial Wednesday but instead pleaded. He was alleged to have possessed the .410-gauge shotguns, both with illegal barrel lengths shorter than 18 inches and neither registered to Gates, Graves said in a statement.

Gates could face a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison without parole, plus a fine up to $250,000.

A rifle barrel can't be less than 16" w/a minimum overall length of 26".

And yet you can spend an extra $300 to get one from the manufacturer in a handgun configuration.

It could be that the man had antique Stevens 410 pistols that were not registered by the cut-off date. I saw a pair of them in a gunshop in the 70's, in to have the wood refinished. The term "sawed-off" might have been added by the media.

There are 20,000 gun laws on the books. When will you run afoul of one?

I knew a fellow that had a Harrington & Richardson 410 Handy Gun, which was included in that short barreled shotgun nonsense. It was a single shot and was spectacular at it's intended use- obtaining game for the pot while on deep woods trips. As far as being a gun to commit crime with, one would have to be a little short of a full load to consider it as having any advantage, but then consider those that enacted the law.

Well, interesting observations and comments. Frankly, I can understand why a guy would like a machine gun as a toy but not this shotgun. I will follow his story and post the actual sentence the judge imposes on this man.
