which set of tires for my truck?

Its time for a new set of tires for my Bronco, I have always bought all terain tires and they worked great over the years But tend to
"Fill" an spin in deep mud so i am considering a set of Mud terains,
The truck is driven over 95% on the Highway and was wondering how mud terain tires behave on dry,wet,snowy and icy roads as compared to the all terain treads.Looking for some feed back before i get them.

Just ask a mechanic you trust. I just picked up a set of Coopers for my Ranger 2WD for $317 total cost. And I like them.

BFG MTR is what I run on my toyota. They are 35" tires and I have only been stuck one time. (I was in 3 and a half feet of water) I have been in the sand mud and on rocks. I have never had a problem with them. They make them in all different sizes. I would sujest that you get a cheap set of rims from the junk yard and get a set of street tires for the non hunting season. It will tripple the life of your mud tires. I would get a set of all terrian tires of mild off road use and keep the mud tires for when you know that you will need them.

I second bfg mud-terrains, though I would go with bfg-AT's since your on the road most of the time. Less noise and tire wear and better handling on wet roads. One downside, these puppies aint cheap.

Me, my friends, and family all run BGoodrich radil T/A's (the K/A models) on our trucks they are the best truck tires I've ever had. They are great offroad. wear great, and don't make a bunch of Whaaa Whaaa Whaaa highway noise. They won't tear up your ball joints, shaft's, or throw your old heap out of alignment (as John Force would say).I and everyone I know who's had them have gotten at least 65,000 miles out of theirs. They are the best in my opinion.

I have had the BFG MUD TERRAINS they are great off road good in the snow and in the mud but on ice or hard pack you are going to wish you had bfg all-terrains I know I did. On the highway the mud terrains have a hum that drives me nuts but some people like it. A friend of mine throws mud bog party's in the summer and there is a fellow who come there with a jeep that has bfg all-terrains he does just fine throught the pit. I think for the uses you are decribing I would lean towards the bfg all-terrain, they are cheaper, better on ice, clean out well, better in sand, last longer.

For a gas engine, I like BFG All-terains. In a diesel, go with BFG mud-terains. With the gas engine you can spin the tires faster...which makes them easier to "clean out" the tread. With diesel's you have lower RPM's and the mud terain's are a lot easier to clean out...and thus, get unstuck.

I think the Cooper Discoverer S/T are the perfect compromise between aggressive tread design, noise, driveability and $$$. That's all I run now.

DON'T GET MUDDERS FOR ANY HIGHWAY USE!

Mudders are a very unbalanced tire made with soft rubber. They will not hold up to highway use, would have to be rebalanced every 1000 miles, and will beat the suspension and front-end out of your truck if driven on the highway. Get a good set of tires for the road, and an extra set of mudders mounted on a spare set of wheels. Put the mudders on only when you are going mudding.

I've been there and done that, and had to pay nearly $1,000.00 to have the front end rebuilt on a 4X4 from driving mudders on the highway at highway speeds. Got an extra set of wheels from the auto-salvage, bought a cheap hydralic jack and cheap impact drive, and just change them as needed. Takes all of 15 minutes.

General makes a nice tire. They have one model that is rather smooth tread yet still has a little bit if you happen off road. I keep thinking of the Grabber but that is more a mud tire I believe. If I remember the model I'm thinking of I'll let you know.

Or Wrangler to, they wear good.

I've always used BFG All Terrains on anything I've had. You can get over 60,000 miles and they work great when you have to get off road. Had the BFG Mud-Terrains once and the road noise was horrible. They worked great off road but were not worth it for me.

The February 2004 issue of 4Wheel & Off Road magazine has a pretty good 'tire test' article in it. Also, there is a good selection of tires throughout the mag in the advertising.

I went from BFG mudders to Dunlop Radial Rover R/V. Great traction, ALOT less noise, and they wear better! dheffley is right, i spent more money on alignment and balance than i did on the tires!

try a set of mud grip tires on the rear and a set of hwy tread on the frount
I use this combination on a 78 ford pickup for 600,000 miles
cuts down on hwy noise and will get you out of most mud holes
the hwy tread also helps on high speed turns as it is so much smoother (steering wheel vibration is cut in half)

I buy tires for around 25 to 30 truck fleet a year. We have had most major brands but I am supprised of all the Cooper replys. On our personnal ones 3 we have 2 on Cooper's and when the other gets ready it will have them also.

I have a set of Buckshot Maxxis Mudders,15" rim,32" tire.I have about 36,000 miles on them ,probably about 4000 left.They are not very noisy at all...if you keep them rotated about every other oil change.
Cost about $400.

if the truck has a lot of highway use, do not put 'mudders on it. You'll hear every lug hit the road the sonic vibration will add lot's of squeaks and rattles down the road. If the truck has ball joints as opposed to a straight axle, it will literally eat cv joints. the wear is crappy. with the big lugs on the mud type tires, each rotation of the tire has thousands of miniature impacts as the individual raised portions of the tread contact the road. had a customer that was in my shop at least 2wice a year with his dash loose, and the radio loose. And he only had 33X9.50/15's. find a good compromise such as the Goodrich A/T's.
