Looks like a red tail to me. About 50 years we raised some Red Tails from chicks after getting the required falconry licenses. Very educational experience.

    Nice picture by the way.

Y'all raised some red tails from chicks? What in the world?
Where did you get the baby hawks?
What did you feed the birds?
Did you successfully return them to the wild?

I have a soft spot in my heart for red tailed hawks. When I was a wild young man I used to fly hang gliders from Lookout Mountain Georgia.
One day, I was about 3,000 feet above the Lookout Valley and I got right above a red tailed hawk. I was about 50 feet away from the big bird, he had a wing span of about 5 feet. I watched him for about 2 minutes, watched him flip his tail and wing feathers as he maneuvered in the spring breeze. What a beautiful big animal!
Too bad I didn't have a video cam with me that day, I would love to post that video on here.

AKA Chicken Hawk . We have two in the vicinity. One flew by close to me one morning walking out to the building. I didn't see it till it swoop down and took a squirrel that was on the ground 20 yd away. Made some screeching sound upon attack.

That Hawk is looking at you like you have a couple of mice on top of your hat!
When I was kid, my aunt and uncles house had a picture window at each end of a large living room. One day my aunt heard a fairly common Thud of a small bird flying into the window. However, this particular thud was was followed by a huge THUD! She went out to look and a huge Red Tail Hawk was laying on the ground knocked out next to a small bird. She put he Hawk in a box and my cousin kept it in a cage for a few months! Big SOB, and very cool!!

We got the chick from nests. We would locate a nest, then wait 1 to 2 weeks after hatching to remove a chick. Red Tails lay from 1 to 3 eggs at a time.

We fed them primarily raw chicken, but also some red meat. To keep their hunting skills up we would buy a small bunny at the pet store, take it to an open school field (when no one was around) let the bird see it, then take it about 100yds away and let it fly.

We kept them for around 5 years. They live for up to 20 years. These birds are very trainable and are used for hunting.

Had nesting Hawks for years in the same place visible from my back yard. I like to hear their calls. I've seen several young learning to fly. Sometimes they come across my yard and land in small bushes and trees. Had one miss and fly into the side of my house once. Yesterday saw a murder(a bunch) of crows which also nest nearby and a hawk doing circles looking like a WW1 dogfight. Saw one swoop down and snatch a bird 10 feet from me once. They are fast. I like having them around.
    Nice pic.
