Why go with FMJ?

I asked this a long while ago on the Experts board and never really got a definitive answer.

I shoot a lot, so I buy ammunition in 1000 round lots. Is there a reason to go with FMJ over HP? My buddies won't shoot HP if they can avoid it, but I don't see what their logic is. I know the FMJ will penetrate deeper, but for target rounds, what's the point?

I guess my question is: should I get the HP for all-around use, or is there something about the FMJ that makes 'em so much better for plinking?

Thanks.

FMJ generally cycles easier until your gun is broken in (500 rounds or so). Then you can jump on the HP train.

Not to mention they are usually much cheaper than HP's.

A lot of people in Greenland uses FMJ for hunting too.

They hunt seal, reindeer/caribou and kill of whales with them.
    Amongst other things...

    I prefer a bigger woundchannel than a through-n'-through from a FMJ.
FMJ's are cheaper and often cycles better as mentioned.

Depending on the stability of the bullet, there is a higher probability that the FMJ will tumble as it travels through game, causing a much more extensive wound than a similar bullet that didn't tumble. This is particularly true regarding smaller/lighter bullets like the 5.56

What caliber do they use to kill whales?

Bullets. This "secondary" method of killing involves shooting the whale if instantaneous death does not result from an explosive harpoon. Some whalers have been known to use machine guns or anti-tank rifles, because of a whale's great size. Killing a whale with a single bullet is virtually impossible; even using an anti-tank rifle, which fires large caliber bullets, requires multiple shots. Therefore, most whalers, particularly the Norwegians, "finish off" the whale by riddling the animal with standard caliber bullets. The whale feels pain from each wound and may not die for some time.

We really are our own worst enemy.
