generally speaking in economics money that is worth very little compared to the US dollar or pound sterling generally represents a lousy economy...

The Japanese economy is pretty darn strong...the exchange rate is about 100 yen to the dollar (give or take). What's the deal? Do the Japanese just like counting large numbers?? [:p]

Actually, the Japanese economy has been pretty stagnant the last 20 years or so. With that said, its still a pretty good economy.

The Japanese has been dealing with slumped economy since the late '80's. The '90's were a bad decade and they're still dealing with it. The US economy just went down to meet the Japanese as they're trying to clime out of the barrel. Now we'll talk big numbers when we hit the exchange rate with the Peso (and the run away inflation and the daily decimal point movement of the US dollar).

In 1974 the exchange rate was 300 Yen to a dollar. Guess the all mighty "dollar" isn't worth much anymore.

When the Japanese real estate bubble burst about a dozen years ago they dragged much of the Pacific Rim down with them. The Japanese economy has actually been rather weak ever since. The drop in the level of Japanese investment here in the USA has actually hurt our own economy since the Japanese were helping to pump up our own real estate market as well as buying up our debt. This gave the Chinese an open door and they walked right in.

In 1972 the exchange rate was 360 yen to the dollar. We called it funny money, an Orion was, and still is 100 yen out of a vending machine. Man could get going good for just a couple of dollars.

First Sergeant had a sign over his desk. Remember 3 things. #1. Yen really is money. #2. There is no such thing as true love. #3. Morning formation goes at 0700.
