    That printing is Kanji. Chinese in origin, also commonly used by the Japanese but not the Koreans (theirs is something all together different). Kanji consisys of 56,000 character. Japanses and Chinese can communicate using Kanji even though they do not speak the same language. Japanese also use another alphabet (more or less) known as katakana (not sure if that is spelled right) that is phonetic. That's the stuff that looks like they inked a chicken's feet and walked them across the paper.
