Anyone have a Dad like this?

Every Easter season, the kids and I take my father to the Broadway Market in Buffalo to pick up his Easter food, kielbasa, cuchin (bread), chzran (horseradish), and, of course, a butter lamb. It's a Polish thing.

He will be turning 80 this year, and heaven bless him, he is still living on his own. His arthritis, however, is slowing him down a little more every year. I, on the other hand, walk at about Mach 2, so I have to slow my natural pace to almost a crawl.

Dad also is a very friendly sort, and has a penchant for starting up random, 15-minute conversations with complete strangers, and the place is wall-to-wall people. So, as I am walking as slow as I possibly can, I will turn around every once in a while, and no Dad. Thank goodness my son is 6'2" and sticks out in a crowd like a sore thumb. I recon back to where he is as I know he is with his Poppa, and of course, there is my father, engaging some complete stranger in one of his conversations, usually men wearing "NAVY" caps, or caps from the ship they served on (Dad always wears his USS Newport News cap and jacket). In the few hours we were there, this must have happened 8 times.[:)]

I have to laugh. I cherish these trips, as every year I wonder whether next year he will tell me the trip is too much for him.[:(]

God bless him, and enjoy your time with him.
It seems like a pain at times now, but before long most likely,....you will wish you could 'waste' several hours with him.

I never had a father that was part of my life.

My dad doesn't hunt eggs, he hunts beer. Only problem is we don't hide them, they are all nice and neat in his fridge.

I wasn't whining, I find him hilarious. I enjoy our trips. I'm just trying to navigate through the throng and find a decent path for him. Just when I do, I find he is no longer behind me.[:)]

There may not be many more trips, make them much more often. I can only think about them.

    OMG, stories about my Dad.

I stop over his house once a week to do his laundry, it is just hard for him to get up and down the steps carrying a laundry basket. One day this summer, I was folding his undershirts, and I pull one out of the basket that is so thread-bare you can pretty much see through it. I suggest throwing it out. He replies, "I'm saving that in case I ever enter a wet t-shirt contest."

I can't make this stuff up...Not bad for having just turned 79...[:D]

We had Pierogi last night. I love them! [:p]

My ex-wife is Polish and I really enjoyed the Polish Easters and Christmases. I especially liked the Oplatek, which is a Polish Christmas wafer. You go around the room and have someone break off a piece and you hug or kiss them and wish them Merry Christmas. My ex had a very hot cousin and I must have wished her a Merry Christmas ten times! [:D]

people always used to tell me 'Your Dad has never met a stranger.' Many times he would invite people we didn't even know home afte just a short conversation. When he passed away the whole town was there and so many people showed or callled it was amazing. Everyone had their own 'Stoney 'story.

I hear you. That is pretty much my Dad. There is no such thing as a stranger, they are just a friend we have not met.
