I want a 200 yard bench rest paper puncher. A friend of mine has one he wants 300 dollars for it's new in bow with papers.

It looks exactly like this one.

So what do you guys think?

I like. I have a couple of guns with the laminated thumb hole stock and I like them. It would be a "one size fits all" thing so make sure it fits your hand.

200 yd with a .17 is pushing it. It is more of a 150 range gun. Step up to something larger. 22/250 or .223

I agree with select-fire. The .17HMR is maybe out of gas at 200 yds. But for 300 bucks I'd buy it anyway. Cool gun, fun round. I'd use it on gophers around here. My wife would steal it, except she's left-handed.

That little 17HMR will reach to 200 yards, but the wind will push it all over...especially in your windy state...hehehe. That seems to be a good price, and put about the same into a good glass for it, and you will not be dissappointed. With the right ammo, on a calm day at 100 yards you should be able to get inside 1/2 inch...if you can control your breathing, and have a solid rest.

Had any Capt'n lately? I got a hold of some fresh Strawberries the other day..the daq's were really good!!![:D][8D][:D][8D][:D][8D]

yeo, that's worth 300 bucks, savage is a good brand and that's a nice setup.

I think for that cartridge it's not about accuracy at long range (cuz it is out of gas at 200 yards) but the accuracy is needed at not-so-long range becasue you're shooting at abnormally small targets.

Buy it. Inside 175 yards your target is dead duck. Just remember the way the .5MM Remington rimfire went(extinct.) Buy a couple cases of ammo and set them back, if for no other reason then the god awful way ammo has been going up quarterly. I've been thinking of making my ruger 9/22 into 9/17 for about a year now.

Oh, did I mention you should buy it?[:D]22

I'm shooting with a built 10/22 right now.
It's the one on the bottom.

    100_0636.jpg

My best to date with it right now is 3 shot group under a dime at 100 yards. I've also shot 10 inch 7 shot groups at 200 yards.
I know there was some luck involved, but right now I still think I can out shoot the gun. I've hit the limits of this gun/round, so it's time for the next step.
If I can shot a 22 round that drops 36 inches at 100 yards than a 17 hmr is going to spoil me. I know that there are better rounds for distance, but they come with a price.
I shouldn't have to get a 2 mortage to spend the day out shooting.
And 10-12 dollars for 50 rounds isn't going to break the bank.
I think this will be a good step up. I'm going to go pick it up this weekend, hopefully.
And for you guys who think I need something bigger. Someday I plan to move up to this.

    With a good Nightforce scope.
I hope by then I will have learned to reload my own.
