7 months and 6 days after sending out the application, but what the hey, IT'S HERE![:D][:D][8D]

I bought me a new vaquero (stainless/ivory) to celebrate.[:D]

I'd be very grateful for any advice other FFL's could offer on getting started, turning a profit without going broke building a huge inventory, etc.

I am...my house and a storage unit, in a commercially zoned area. My biggest problem is not having much capital to work with.[:)]

Probably should start out buying low and selling high. Then you can move on into selling at below your cost but making it up in volume. (LOL)

Yeah, I'm dealing out of my house. I have a home office that I have dedicated to the business.

I didn't think I was going to get it because there's a soccer mom in the zoning office that refused to give me a letter stating that it was OK to run a retail establishment in the rural/agricultural zone I live in. The BATFE inspector said I needed such a letter but I couldn't get it so I just waited her out. I'm going to have to try real hard not to gloat when I go back to the zoning office to apply for a signage permit so I can hang my sign in front of my house. [}:)][:D][;)] This woman was red-in-the-face angry about me even asking for such a letter. Very sad.

Welcome aboard and good luck. I strongly urge you to avoid the common trap of selling to your buddies at low or zero markup in order to produce quick sales. This action will later come back to haunt you because these same guys will ALWAYS come expect a big discount and this hurts you bottom line. When I got my FFL over 20 years ago I remember vividly one old friend who told me that he was going to "help" me out by buying a rifle from me in order to show I was making sales-- of course he wanted the gun at dealer cost with no markup in exchange for this "help". There is no reason to exploit anyone (not at such an early stage anyway [:D]) but you will need to make some money so just offer a fair deal and you will develope a satisfied clientele who will usually come to you first for their firearms wants and needs.

Special orders for the odd ball guns that most storefronts won't stock can be a great source of sales (and profits) for you and I also suggest that you look into LE sales. Cops are cheap[B)] but they buy lots of guns and if treated right will tell their other cop buddies and you will soon be making plenty of sales and making important friends in the LE community. This can pay off handsomely if you want to expand into items like machineguns or other NFA items which mandate the need of police demonstration letters. This allows you to have lots of nice toys sitting around and of course in order to perform demos you need to practice with your inventory and you simply MUST drag out and fire those M16s, G3s or MP5s to remain in top form!

My friend, let me warn you of something. My sister is the head of zoning for the little town 4 miles west of where I live. Now I will be the first to admit that my sister is a witch. Anyway...her brother in law (her husbands sister's husband) had an ffl. When the brother in law divorced the sister in law, he moved out.(obviously) So just because my witch sister didnt like him, she refused to grant the change of address to him to keep up his ffl. IMHO that was a blatent abuse of power to promote a personal agenda. But there's nothing anybody can do. He knows the situation.
So I guess what I'm telling you is be careful of the politics and pissing off the wrong person.
    Good luck friend.
