I have read several places and heard a #13 shade is what is needed any darker makes it difficult and lighter may pose a risk
and from what was posted its not all that common to have one

Arc Yes. Gas goggles no. Auto Darkening will not work.

    NO!

A #12 lens (and anything less) is not dark enough.

A #14 Lens is too dark

#13 lens are very hard to find.

Of course, if you keep one eye closed.....

I watched the full transit of Venus last time with a welders helmet, not the auto darkening time. No issues at all.

The problem is that mind are not marked. Will watch it on TV tomorrow night. Nothing is worth damaging my 72 year old eys any more than they are already damaged.

I will assume that Trinity forgot to use the green sarcasm font. That's kinder than assuming he has somehow missed the approximately 9,538 notices, warnings, stories, and even threads here warning about welding helmets and the eclipse. Because nobody can be that oblivious.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

Mine is an auto darkening helmet and I don't think it will work.

I am going to watch it but not look directly at it.

Well Rocky Raab, considering I haven't logged on GB for several days I am oblivious to what you have been aware of for evidently so long.

I do have two welding helmets, one is an Older Helmet that I can't say what it is rated at, and an auto-darkening newer one that can dial up to 13. However, like previously it doesn't work, but the older one does.

NASA says a minimum of #12 welding glass and also said some people might think that would be a little too bright for them. Or a 13 or 14, the 14 is said to be too dark to really see too much, whereas a 13 is perfect. But they're really hard to get hold of.

I bought #12s for it and it wasn't too bright for me

I'm wondering if two sixes would work,

Well, Trinity, you must also have been absent from newspapers, TV, radio, and the entire rest of the internet to not be aware of the eclipse and the viewing recommendations.

Cranked the sensitivity up and the highest darknesd setting, stared at the sun with no problems. Only thing that bothered me is it got cold real quick here.

I used my old welding helmet, it was hazy here with the helmet you could see it pretty clear. Then went back into the shop and work.

Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

My pinhole onto a piece of cardboard worked fine. No full-head box.

Well, the world didn't end. Guess I'll go ahead and pay my school tax bill ... [:(]

    Rocky Rabb,

If you must know I was a CMA State bike rally since last Thursday.

I didn't get back till late last night, so I had better things to do then check the internet or read a newspaper.

By the way I did use my older welder's helmet, and it worked just fine.

I used my old welding helmet and im not blind, but then i made it thru my early teen years without going blind so the eclipse was a walk in the park.[:D]

    Rocky Raab,

That I wasn't tracking all the alleged past GB post about watching the eclipse safely...yes, but then you "assumed", and when you assume you make an "*" out of "u" and "me"...[;)]

What assume? I said you must have been absent from newspapers, TV, radio, and the entire rest of the internet. And you admit you were.

    Rocky, it's your quote.

"I will assume that Trinity forgot to use the green sarcasm font."

It was an honest question I asked here. Why are you so hung up on it? Check your reasoning for even asking your question. Was it to try and call me out, or did you just want poke the bear?

Maybe it's just the way you type, but you are coming across like an internet bully looking to pick a fight.

I just got my cataracts removed few months back and seeing real good now for shooting and hunting. I just watched it on TV. Could have used my welding helmet and I had several of the #13 lens that I no longer use and could have easily installed.

My thoughts were why look at it when I can see it on TV. Surely I can trust the news for maybe once that it won't be FAKE news again, but again several people paid lots of money and did not have to trust the news.
Maybe some people are really listening to Donald about FAKE news and not trusting the news media.[;)]

Set my auto darkening to 13 and cranked the sensitivity...work like a charm even when the sun got dim. Even snuck a peek directly at it just like I did back in 1979. [:)]
