Anybody know anything about chimneys?

I've got a chimney on my house that I guess is framed out with lumber and has Hardie siding. It is about 15' tall. The chimney cap has been damaged and is pried up on one side. Well, a bird has built a nest in the chimney. My question... will this type of chimney support my weight (220lbs.) if I get up on the roof and lean a ladder against it to replace the chimney cap?

I've tried to get two different construction guys to come look at it, but I guess it is too small of a job for them. I just don't want to damage anything. I'm not sure what type of weight it can take since it is not a brick chimney.

If it won't take the weight of your ladder leaning against it you have bigger problems than a loose chimney cap.

You must have one hell of a pitch on your roof to have that tall of a chimney.

Sounds Like a metal Chimney Like a Air jet With a Wood Chase Around it it Should. But again Depends on The Contractor that Built it
Hardie Is Not very Flexible though....

If you can position the ladder so that most of your weight is on the roof instead of the chimney. Also depends upon the slope of your roof. The longer the hypotenuse and the shorter the the adjacent side is, the less weight there will be against the chimney. Did you take trig?

OK, Smartarses. I may have exaggerated the height a little. It looks more like 8'. I will give it a go tomorrow. If you don't hear from me by 5pm, then you know I fell off of the roof and broke my neck. [;)]
