We got a lot done though.

Four dogs, fully vaccinated and checked for heartworms and intestinal worms. 12 months worth of heartworm, intestinal worm, flea, and tick preventive for all four as well.

Not finished either. We found that our senior dog, Molly, has some dental issues that must be addressed at a later date. Doc was too busy to get to it today.

$1,398.00! Wow!

    Dogs can be expensive.

I had one dog that was 1 y/o who had a liver shunt, 3K later he was well and he has been my best friend for the last 9 years.

I had another that had lymph cancer, she went through chemo and lived 3 more years, cost 5K.

I would bet I have spent 50K on dogs in the last 25 years and every penny was worth it.

With 3 dogs I've had bills for routine care of around $700 so I guess I got off lucky?

I've only paid for rabies/distemper shots, other treatments I do myself.....they've been snake bit, broken bones, run over by vehicles, caught in fences for days, large deep cuts...........all seem to survive and live long lives while still loving me [;)] [:)]. First aide training for animals in these parts begins early in our lives. Sadly, I've had to put a few down also myself [:(].

We did use a vet who had VERY reasonable rates, but he died. His grandson took over the practiced, and tripled all the rates. So, we went back to a country vet we have used before. His rates are more than old Doc, but much lower than grandson Doc.

Here is what we got done:

    Rabies 3 year vaccination $16.00

    DHLP/Parvo vaccination $28.00

    Bordetella vaccination $18.00

    Intestinal worm exam $22.00

    OHW/LYM/EHR/ANA Test $32.00
    (Heartworm Disease/Lyme Disease/Ehrlichiosis/Anaplasmosis)

12 month supply of Trifexis $236.00

    TIMES FOUR

I find it very hard to believe that anyone can get this much work done, and walk away with this much medication for $300.00.

We priced this level of work and medication at grandson Doc's place, and it was over $2,000.00.

There is a manufacturer's rebate on the Trifexis though, and we will get $150.00 back in the mail.

Trifexis is good stuff. One pill a month to protect against heartworms and three kinds of intestinal worms, AND FLEAS! That's the biggie. I hate fleas, and will not have them around. By treating the dogs, we don't have to treat the house or the yard. Our dogs may pick up a flea on a walk, but when it bites, it dies.

I have fought fleas the old-fashioned way, and don't care to do it again.

FCD, you have an outstanding vet. We have priced all the vets in our area, and the one we are using now has the most reasonable prices.

    David,

The biggest thing with vets is you have to seek out the large animal vets. In my opinion, they are the 'true' vets.

That's exactly what our vet is (was). He treated all animals; but after a few years, he decided to drop the large animals and stick with dogs, cats and other small animals. He is a darn good vet and doesn't rob you blind.

    Nunn,
Look into buying your pet meds online. Google it. We buy ours for less than half of the local vet. They still make PLENTY Of money off of us, so I don't feel bad about it!

We have four dogs and a cat, so our vet makes a bundle off of us, but I refuse to pay 2x for meds, unless we need it right that minute!

Trifexis is only a tiny bit cheaper online unfortunately. I checked when my mother put her pooch on it and told me how much the vet charged. The vet was only three dollars more than the best online price I could find.

My old dog is 13 years old stays outside and is really starting to show his age. I think he needs a hip joint replacement and a cataract taken off one eye and glasses for the other. Other than worming, rabies shots and flea powder he has needed nothing else up til now. He probably needs about $50000 spent on him to make it another year.

Growing up on a farm, there were several dogs around over the years.

NEVER paid a dime for any of them ~ they were 'freebe' giveaways or just wandered in, got fed and stayed.

Only recall one the folks bought worm medicine for. None went to a vet, that was for the cattle.

Most stayed around for a few years and then wandered off and they were 'outside dogs' and could come/go as they pleased.

I'm shocked at the amount of $$ Americans spend on pets...$56 BILLION in 2014

Why be shocked at what people do with THEIR own money. It belongs to them after all.

I would much prefer spending money on a pet versus having more taken for food stamps/welfare for deadbeats. That's just me I reckon.[;)]

    David,

Honestly, you need to find another vet! Not trying to be mean, but I can get all that done for less than $300 bucks...and the vet comes to me to do it all too! THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE COST THAT MUCH!! In fact, I can even get them rattle snake vaccinated for that much.

I get so mad when I read about people paying these outrageous fees to predatory vets who charge an arm and a leg!

There's a vet in town who charges like that. Told them (the one time I was there) I wanted to talk to the owner; turned out he was there at the time too. Asked him if he was serious about the charges. He starts in on me about how they are a "premier" horse and dog vet and about how I should be glad I even got an appointment!!! No kidding!

I asked him, "so, if you're such a 'premier' horse vet, why then do you sub out all your heavy horse services to someone else????" He got all red and started hemming and hawing. Then I asked him why they sent all their heavy dog surgeries over to the next town. More hemming and hawing, then silence. I told him, "maybe I'll just go contract with that vet instead...who seems to be doing all the "Premier" work anyway!". And that's just exactly what I did!

I love, love, love our vet! She, or one of her staff vets, will show up in the middle of the night if we call, come in to the office on off hours and they always answer the phone. She is an angel!!! Their prices are 25% of the other vet! Plus, the services are better, far more professional and they ain't afraid of nothin'! This ain't no mamby-pamby vet either. They'll all go shoulder deep into a raging cow in a heartbeat.

Just so you don't think I'm blowing smoke; as you may recall, the border collie, Rhode, needed hip replacement surgery (at 1 year). I asked her, "how much?". She said I can't tell you exactly, but it will probably be about $2,500 for the whole procedure and follow ups. She charged me $1,380 for the whole thing!! That surgery at the other vet would have been $10,000!

You need to find a new vet! That's highway robbery!

edit...You probably already figured this out, but the reason I asked her "how much?" for the hip surgery was because I was honestly weighing the value of the dog vs. putting him down.

    Are you dating your vet?

    Well, you should be!

This one has cost me almost $3000 over the past 12 weeks trying to get the bones straightened out, pinned and the rest.

I told my wife that it would be cheaper to put her down and buy a new dog, but who could do that to your best friend? Hopefully she should get her cast off next week.
