Pet Owners, (Flea preventative question.)

Are you finding it a very bad year for fleas?

My dog is indoor only, unless he is on his cable trolley out front (100'X 45') under close supervision and for a limited amount of time.

He can go out on the back deck, also on a cable trolley, for as long as he likes.

I find if he is out front, (in the yard) he comes in with fleas all over his legs, soon to be harrasing him, on his body.

He seems to be hyper sensitive, almost allergic to them.

I've not treated my yard (yet) with Dursban, as I am resistant to Chemical cures due to their toxicity.

I treated my dog this aft. with a topical treatment. ("one treatment per month.) I break the treatment down to 1/2 dose for two weeks, then another topical treatment/dose for another two weeks.

Applied along the spine, from the base of his head, to the base of his tail.

15-20 minutes later, he had a marked change in his comfort level and relaxation.

Sorry, print is too damn small, even with 2.5X magnifiers to see active ingredient. [xx(]

Can I ask what you use/recommend?

Thanks in advance.

    Collar only, works for you?

I looked for a collar when I was in the store I usually buy his dog stuff at, this past Friday.

I did not even see any flea collars. I was looking for them. Should have asked, I guess.

    Everything had been reorganized/relocated.

I've never personally, had good success with flea collars only.

    Thank you for the response.

We never had success with cheap flea collars either. These Seresto collars work, we used frontline in the past and at first that stuff worked good for us then after using it for a couple years it all of the sudden didn't work for our dogs anymore. The vet and other pet owners highly recommended using the Seresto collar and our three dogs haven't had any fleas or ticks on them since we started using them. They last a long time too, the collars on our dogs were put on in February and they are still doing their job today.

"Trifexis" Is that an oral treatment, Vet only?

I looked (also) for an oral treatment, and did not see one.

i bet there are no fleas under the collar [:D]

squirrels bring them to the yard, and yes some are allergic to their bite and some allergies to the cure too

my best friend the dog breeder/trainer had to get special ointments for one of his dogs from the vet due to both allergies

Trifexis is given orally at home, but is purchased at a Vet only, as far as I know.quote:Originally posted by 84Bravo1

That is what we use on all eight of our dogs....supposed to last eight months. Some of my dogs spend 3/4 of the day outside in a wooded lot, we haven't had any fleas or ticks.

We used to use Frontline but our vet said that this wasn't working with the current crop of fleas/tick. We switched to Nexguard and it is working well.

I appreciate all of the information, and replies.

(Except) The you need to get Chickens. [:0]. Too damn noisy at night/early AM.

My neighbor down the road has them. Every morning when I leave at anywhere between 4- 4:45 AM, I'm thinking, I'd have to kill them bassturds if they were next door. [xx(]

Just an observation Ken, not sure if it applies to your situation or not. I had flea and tick issues plaguing our four critters off and on for several years until I started applying a good heavy dose of pelleted lime to the yard spring and fall. Haven't had a flea or tick-in spite of deer, fox, etc crossing the yard-for over 20 years now. Is it possible that the lime changing the PH of the yard has an effect?
Maybe HeDog will be along to offer some insight.

    demetrius earth

It is a white powder made from pulverized corral I think it is. Completely harmless the everything but bugs. You can eat it ( small amounts) without a problem. You can bomb your yard with it and kill every bug. Then let Fido out to roll around in it and it won't hurt him.

    A slight, but important correction.

NOTE: WOULD NOT RECOMMEND USING THIS ON BABY OR JUVENILE ANIMALS. except maybe the diatomaceous earth.

Ship a 10 lb. bag of FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth overseas and it lasts about 3 years. Use it for my chickens. No fleas or mites. Have a "duster" spray once a month, including coop.

Yes you can eat it, no taste. Not a poison. The powder is very fine grains:
Diatomaceous earth is made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica. Over a long period of time, diatoms accumulated in the sediment of rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans. Today, silica deposits are mined from these areas.

Also use a pour-on Parasiticide for CATTLE called Ivermectin for my chickens. My calculated dosage for chickens is ONE DROP per pound. Shelf life is one year +. Bottle contains enough for maybe a 1000 chickens a few cows. Buy a bottle every year.

Ivermectin Kills: Roundworms (including brown stomach worm), lungworms, grubs, sucking lice, biting lice, mange mites, horn flies and probably a lot of other stuff. Not a total wormer but haven't used anything else.

Using a standard eye dropper, a three pound chicken gets one drop ON THE SKIN under each wing and on the neck (three drops).

I've been using both products for 7 years with no problems.

Use pyrethrin dust for poultry when cleaning a coop and on chickens once a year.

There are populations of fleas that have become resistant to many of the medications.

Just remember that most posts here recommend systemic poisons, not prevention. Prevention is infinitely better. I believe we lost a dear Curly Coat to a cancer caused by what we thought was a kindness.

SEVIN applied within guidelines while protecting our domestic animals from exposure has worked in the past. From what I understand it has a short active life, is deadly to fleas and ticks, and can be applied selectively so as not to kill bees and beneficial insects.

Very little needed and it's inexpensive. Actually just garden dust available almost at any supply store.

    Just a thought.

We were dissatisfied with the topical liquids because they messed up the dogs hair. Purchased Nexguard from vet. It is expensive but works. No fleas, no ticks. If you get the vets prescription you could shop for best price at various on line sources. Prescription strength based on dogs weight. It is chewable but we usually have to hide it in other food.
