I am sure SC is beautiful and all that, but I think I will take my chances with the snow and the wolves up here in northern WI! [:)]

I won't walk out in the woods unless I have my hunters boots on. the copperheads are impossible to see when they aren't moving and they lay still trying to avoid you so if you come there way you are dead.

and if you see one there is another one close by. mated pairs never get far from one another. I have seen nests of these things with 20 some odd babies that were 6-8 inches long and at one day old they have enough venom to drop several men.

we keep anti-venom shots in the fridge. it'll save your life but it won't help the pain for the next 24 hours.

we lose more dogs to them than anything else.

I know 3 people who were bitten by copperheads.
Two were in the mountains, one on a farm.
All three survived with moderate swelling and pain that went away after about 3 days.
I've been an outdoorsman all my life and have only seen 5 here in SW Virginia.

Lived in SC for 26 yrs. Seen one black snake out in the field 200 yd from the house , I left it alone..and one water moc. that was on a log. It was huge but no challenge for the .38 snub. 2 snakes in 26 yr. Now copperheads in Kentucky were not hard to see.

That work is one of the better of the state guides. Always wanted to get Dr. Martof to autograph my copy, but never saw him at the herp meetings.

My one and only encounter with a rattlesnake on Pigeon Mtn south of Chickamauga, Ga, ended up with him making this nice mount.

I was bitten by a copperhead in upstate SC back in the mid 70s while clearing brush. They are almost invisible unless they move and will let you walk all around them but do take offense when stepped on.

I hope I don't jinx myself. I have hand cleared my roads inside of 25 acre plot and home site. I have seen 4 snakes in 17 years there.

A timber rattler that I killed (the dog took credit though and rolled all over it).

A black long snake that moved so fast it cleared the road before I could even get a good look. (racer?)

Two of those Red on black friend of Jack that made me really think hard about the rhyme.

A dead something that got in the mesh I used to protect the blueberry bushes and strangled itself and then was eaten by something.

I would be VERY happy to never see another.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Took my wife to San Juan Island, Washington for her birthday last week.
We were walking around the American Camp and there was a big snake sunning it's self right in the path.
It was her birthday so I pointed it out to her but it would have been funny to watch when she stepped over it and it moved.
    It was a garter snake.
