I've got a few nice pieces of purpleheart wood... I'd like to make some scales so I can try and make some 1911 grips... what I have is essentially 2x4 like, just a tad bigger. How does one cut this to start?

just cut slabs slightly larger than the grip you plan to make
for a 1911, especially first attempt, go about 2"x5" to give a bit of extra room for error
about 3/8" thick so you have enough to make sure backs are flat/smooth (finished grip should be 1/4" +/- depending on your hand)
and make your screw holes FIRST
reason being, even if you have the grips PERFECT, the slightest mistake adding the holes later will have the grip really off from fitting the frame
(ask how i learned THAT a long time ago...)
