How do you read a thread?

I see in another thread someone state that there "Is a lot of hostility in this thread" and I wondered if I was reading the same thread.

The same thread that someone gets a hostile vibe is a thread that I see ideas and opinions being discussed. I really like the threads that have several differing ideas. Especially ideas that differ from mine.

What do you guys read in a thread of differing viewpoints?

I only think it's hostile if there is name calling, etc. Like someone calling a person a "moron" or "idiot" or worse if their opinion is different. Or if someone denigrates someone for not having enough "experience" to have an opinion. Or someone advocating genocide for whatever reason. You see that occasionally.

Other than that, I like hearing lots of opinions. Especially about things I don't know much about (which is a lot here...)

    I have seen it.

There are a few here that once they post on a topic I tend to stay away after that. Some have recently been sent packing.[B)]

I guess I miss or overlook the mean spirits.
I just usually think or hope it is all just good natured ribbings.

I'd wager that most here are only able to do so if their lips are moving.[;)][:D]

Most people don't get worked up over posts, those that do get worked up over too much in real life too. I blame bad underwear elastic.

I find the difference is pretty obvious in their logic and debating skills. The forum discussions are much friendlier if the participants debate the ideas and offer logical evidence to support their positions. When that happens, I sometimes find myself on the wrong side and am convinced by their logic that they are right. It gets very unfriendly when a participant does NOT have those logic skills, has little or NO valid evidence to support him, and has to resort to implying or just outright stating that the other party has been duped or is gullible or stupid for believing otherwise. Their lack of reasoning ability prevents them from even realizing that such tactics reflect back on them and not the target of their attack. When you encounter that in the forums, just state your position on an issue and give valid verifiable facts supporting that position and then move on to another topic. After all, you probably have a life. [:)] The reasonable readers will understand your position and probably agree and they will also recognize the weakness of your opponent. You will never convince the others, so don't waste your time on them. [;)] After all, you've probably heard the old expression about not arguing with stupid people. They always bring you down to their level then they beat you up with their overwhelming experience!! [:D][:D]

Two old men are walking down the street, and one notices a dog further ahead, licking himself.

First geezer: Hey Sammie, see that dog up there licking himself? Sure wish I could do that!

Second geezer: So? What's the big deal? Just ask him nice...

i often see a similar post and wonder what that person is reading
i think some read with a biased eye SEARCHING for anything they can percieve as hostile or argumentative

i have on only a few occassions been insulted or "attacked" on the boards and chose to just avoid giving a response (o.k. at least MOST of the time i dont respond) because there is usually no resoning with some once they post their opinion, let alone change their understanding of the situation or their pre-concieved idea

other posts have continued for weeks at times with good clean exchange of ideas and viewpoints which made engaging daily reading as well as giving the grey matter in my skull some activity!
