ATF called a friend today about a gun in crime

My Buddy Bob called me today and said "I want to thank you", I had no clue what for.
He said I told him awhile back if he was to sell any guns privately it wouldn't be a bad idea to get the info on the guys drivers license.

Apparently he sold a gun 3 weeks ago and it was used in a crime (they wouldn't tell him what crime) in West Virgina.

A CZ 52 he bought years ago with his C&R, which is expired so I don't think he has to continue to keep a bound book entry once it converts to his private collection.

The ATF person asked him the whereabouts of the gun and he said when he told her he sold it she said "We need to know who you sold it to".
He gave the ATF the persons info but thinks that person probably sold it to someone else and is probably not the criminal.

Bob was happy to have the info but unless I'm mistaken a face to face sale in our State (SC) requires no records being kept and he could have told them he sold it and has no clue who the guy is couldn't he?
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Am I missing the part about "stolen"?

When I sell a gun it is just gone. Not like they could link me to any crime it may be used in after that time, so I dont worry.

Some day I would love to get a call about my guns that were stolen.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.

Registration is about control not enforcement...

Not sure how this played out but if they have the gun and not the perp is the only reason I can think it would matter.
Like if he dropped the gun running away I guess. Otherwise who cares who originally bought the gun if you have the bad guy and it isn't stolen.

These days when I buy or sell a gun privately, especially sell a gun I get two good guy IDs ( VA ID, voter registration card or CHL) and I provide a BOS for both of us. It is pretty standard practice around here, especially on the online gun classified site I use. I've never had someone refuse, and it is in the ad upfront and if they refuse I don't do business with them, its pretty simple.

I can't say that about all the guns I've sold over the years, but most of them I have a BOS on for who left with them. If a gun that was originally purchased by me shows up at a crime scene, involved in a serious crime I'd prefer to be able to provide that information to the ATF then not, just my opinion on the matter.

How did the AFT know it was him that sold the gun?

They probably traced it through the Importer. If the friend bought it with his C&R directly from the Importer then they would have the record.
