You don't want cheap synthetic oil. It's not any good. Use a premium synthetic like Amsoil and you get 25,000 between changes. I pay $8 a quart, but with the extended use time, it comes out cheaper in the long run.

Yes, there is 5W-20 synthetic oil.

I run 0w-20 in my Taurus out here in ND. In the depths of our sub arctic winter it does help, I never once had to plug my car in and it started every time.

Two minutes fifty seconds of ranting and about twenty seconds on the subject. I can see why this guy is so popularon this site. I wrote an entire post about synthectic fuels, my background with them when I was working for Union Oil as a petroleum engineer from 1979-1984 and the Synthectic Oil Company which was funded by the US government. Through the use of coal gasification viable crude oil can be extracted and it works perfectly in all internal combustion engines. The technology has been around for many decades but the $45 per barrel was the extraction cost back in 1980 and since coal prices have gone up consderabley since that time so $45 is not going to be valid now. Simple fact: Coal is about as popular in this country as nuclear power and expanding the mining of coal is going to be about as likely as expanding off shore drilling. Coal can be made very clean but right now the technology to do so is costly and not well received by the coal industry, who don't want to bother. Simple political reality is that someone high up is going to have to make a big push for synthectic fuels and right now we are getting no direction from anyone in a position to do anything. What have we heard from GW, McCain or Obama about synthectic fuel production?

What filter keeps synthetic oils clean enough to run for these extended intervals or do you change filters more frequently

Amsoil sells their own especially made for their synthetic oil and long life filtering. I wouldn't use the oil without the special filter.
