Strike "anywhere" matches don't

I bought a package of three boxes of these. They still have the white heads but trying to strike them anywhere but the box generally ruins them rather than ignites them.

You're just not doing it right. I never have trouble striking them on just about anything, including my pant leg of jeans or thumb nail.

Mine worked well on coarse surfaces...never could pull off that thumb nail trick (but haven't really tried to all that much)

Sounds like they got a little moisture. Are they old?

Could be they are damp, too!

Also, have you noticed that they're not making them like they used to, too?

Really, they're not! The sticks are thinner and the phosphorus head is smaller. Lucky the damn things strike at all. Hold the match up near the strike-head between your thumb and index finger, put your 3rd finger on the strike-head, behind it and strike the match against a rough surface, like a smooth rock, a board, the seat of your pants, etc. Let your 3rd finger slide off the match head about half way into the strike, since it's only there to support the head.

My point exactly. The ones we had when I was young really did strike pretty much anywhere. These relatively new ones I have don't work well at all.

I always like the "kitchen" matches. Bigger, stronger, and easier to strike.

Also, if you look at the stick, you can hold them cross grained and they are stronger.

Hey Brier 49, if near Durham gunshows, I have seen them there. Maybe others too

So now I've had someone who can't get them email and ask me to send them some. Durned if I can remember where I bought these, but I said I'd look into it.

I have some 'survival' matches in my emergency kit for hunting that have the 'head' material half way down a 4" match. I use a bic to light them inside the tinder. Works really well.

I can't find the danged things Henry. Clouder told me one time he could get them. I should have begged him to get me some. I liked those big kitchen matches also.

I picked up 3 boxes a year or two ago but don't remember where exactly I got them. Maybe one of the dollar stores or Big Lots.

Most REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) and ACE Hardware stores carry them. If you don't have one close, you can order them online.

I'm telling you, they don't make them the same any more! We ARE talking about the strike-anywhere kitchen matches!

The sticks are thiner and the tips don't have the same amount of phosphorous material that they used to. Better than nothing, though.

Here's a tip: use two of them at once!

Another tip: buy them at Wally World!

Tip numero tres: spray the stick and head with hair spray to help keep them dry. don't overdo it.

Tippo quattro: light a candle and dip the heads in the wax and let them dry. use your fingernail to scrape the wax off the tip when you get ready to light them. That keeps them dry, too. You could just dip the whole match in melted parrafin.

Otro ves: don't sit on the box!!!

y uno mas: put each box of matches in a separate pint size Zip-Loc freezer bag.

I'm boring the hell out of you today because when I was a kid I had a huge supply of these kitchen matches, each one carefully dipped in parrafin.
