of ownership?
I took a rifle with me yesterday, thinking I might trade it as partial payment for another, if I found 1 of about 3 or 4 I currently MUST have![:)] Long story behind WHY I'd be willing to get rid of a gun but, anyway..........

Remington Model 700 BDL Custom Deluxe (the one with engraving), 7mm RUM, honest-to-God, like new condition.I bought the rifle new in 2004, it has less than 100 rds through it, I mean to say it is in MINT condition! I even offered to produce the box, owner's manual. Figured Gander Mtn would be toward the low end of the spectrum as far as what they'd give me for my toy and towards the high end as far as what they'd want for theirs, boy was I right! With the Leupold one-piece base and rings the lady offered me $315.00! BTW, the Model 700's they're selling, NOT Custom Deluxes are priced OVER $600.
So, am I expecting to get too much for my rifle? Don't tell me to look at the recently completed auctions OR to "Ask the Experts", I want to hear YOUR opinions!
Blast Away!

Niche guns in odd calibers are usually quite slow to turn around. After all, YOU are trying to get rid of it and you bought it in the first place.

What was the caliber of the rifle you wanted?

    It's just business.

big company...big overhead....small desire= screwed you...sell the rifle on GB then go buy the one you want. trades are a losing prop at best

My opinion - Your rifle is worth more than theirs. They know that - but because they run a business they can make the rules...

For the price difference of the two you could have it rebarreled to a caliber you like better.
Screw them..........that's what they are trying to do to you. Sell it yourself if you don't want to rebarrel it.

p3skyking asked, "What was the caliber of the rifle you wanted?"

A BAR in 25-06 and a Bushmaster Varminter(forget the EXACT nomenclature) are 2 on my current list [:)]

" Niche guns in odd calibers ...?"
Odd caliber, maybe for here in Wisconsin, but if you want a big deer or bear dead at 400+ yds.........I bought it for a song, intending to use it for larger game, a hunt my brother and I had planned that will NEVER happen, now [:(]

I may well have put too much value on the rifle, but $315?!?!?! I'll tell you about the part of the conversation involving the Leupold Vari-X 4-12x40 OA another time! *LOL*

The guy at a small local store offered $375 right off the bat, said we could "get closer" if I found something I really wanted (I was looking at what he had "in stock")[?]

If they gave you what your rifle is worth and sold you theirs for what it was worth they would not be in business very long.

You will never break even or come close to it trading a firearm for a new one at a gunshop, especially Gander Mountain. I don't think you want to much for your rifle, you are just trying to sell/get rid of it the easy way. Sell it yourself and get what it is worth. Then look for the rifle you want and be patient until you find a good deal. It takes more time and effort but it is the only way to break even or come as close to it as possible.

Your rifle should bring the old golden rule on trades.. 70% of purchase price. I would list it on GB and BUY on GB.

    wanted...

Blue book values...page 1128 (older book 23rd edition..)

    MSR was 661..

    100% lists at 530

98% is 420 and so on till you reach 60% at 195...

The 7mm RUM was new in 2001, so at 315 they offered you, that is a little less than 95% in this blue book....345 is what sits at 95%...

I would find a smaller gun shop and put it on consignment.

    After a litle introspection:
I must confess, this is true. When I went looking, I REALLY wanted to buy a gun and taking the RUM with me was a "deliberate spur of the moment" attempt at doing something I didn't/don't REALLY want to do. As impractical (for me, here in Wis.) as it is I love the rifle and don't really WANT to let it go. I'm sounding like a woman, now![:0]*LOL*

I thank ALL OF Y'ALL for your replies!

you said you are from WI , if you don't know about them call Moe hardware in BlackRiver Falls , 715-284-4621 , they may be a small hardware store but are one of the largest firearm movers in the state , if they don't have it they can sure get it , they are even open on sunday to noon

GSKY-(Goegraphically speaking where are you located?) I have a coupla' places locally that can usually get ANYTHING, trust me that's not a problem!*LOL* BUT, thanx for the info, I'll be sure to check them out the next time I get up that way, or maybe compare their prices just to keep my local guys "honest". Thanx again, never too many sources for firearms!
BTW, there's a place in Oostburg, WI (just south of Sheboygan), Daane Ace Hardware-920-564-2238, if you get over that way, CHECK THEM OUT. The gun room is upstairs and you never know what you'll find. They can get just about anything, too.

I'd pay about $400 for that rifle. The gun shop has to hoild the gun in inventory til its sold, then they only make $85 and in the meantime they have tied up capital that could be earning interest of making money in some other way.

Sell the gun yourself and take $400. Also, if what you really want is the same gun in another caliber, follow the re-barreling route suggested.
