Stock Staining Problem

I used some minwax stain on a brand new unfinished stock this morning and I screw up. I knew to be careful with the amount of time the stain is on end-grain and tried to adjust for that. I missed. The stock is much too dark in a few areas. Is there any way I can lighten those places or do I just have to strip the whole darn thing and start over?
It's too late for me, save yourself.

...I don't use minwax. If it is an oil stain, penetrating stain, and the stock was "prepped" properly...it's in the wood.

You might try washing it down with mineral spirits, while using a scotch bright pad; and drying it off as you go. If that doesn't work, try some hotter thinner, like lacquer thinner. It will have to dry completely after any thinner to be able to tell if either lightened it any...[;)]

After doing your best to clean the whole stock with mineral spirits you could locally treat the darker area. You might conside the very very careful application of a 50/50 water/bleach mix using q-tip to apply to the area you want to light. put a little on, let it dry and try again until stain disappears. Even if the spot goes white you can still start over with new stain.
