Notice how it doesnt say anything about telephone calls!

I call effects the same as possessions. The founding fathers were at no loss for words. if they wanted to add something about conversations, private speech etc. they could have.
There were no telephones in that day, there were letters which being A means of correspondents would probally be the same, in the view of the founders.
I would agree that papers might mean correspondance, which could be the equivalent of telephone conversations.
