The mrs bought "Blue Ice" potato vodka to make vanilla extract with.
it was $40 a bottle!
can't tell you anything about taste...I stay away from stuff like that.[B)]
..I'm no "conny-sewer", but I drank Absolut until a barkeep at the
MGM in Vegas suggested Kettle One. It makes a very good breakfast
Bloody Mary. On the other hand, he was an excellent mixologist, so
maybe it was just his recipe that made Kettle One a step above.
I never really looked for a "good tasting" vodka as I thought they were all just mixers....vodka tastes like rubbing alcohol and gin tastes like the smell of hairspray!!
Just a reminder since this is a Vodka thread, Absolut Vodka ran an ad in Mexico a couple of years back. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDUdFKpH8gM Their tagline was, In An Absolut World. It showed the country of Mexico owning the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado and Texas. I was glad to see that very few people listed them as a better vodka. When I buy better Vodka I get Stoli.
Vodka is cheap. If you put it in a deep freeze, you won't be able to taste the shot anyway.
Gin is a different matter. There are a lot of different flavor components to a true gin. I would imagine that gin, like scotch, is an acquired taste.
That being said, my favorite gin is called Junipero. It's made by the Anchor Distilling, the same guys that brew Anchor Steam Ale. Another favorite is Tanquaray Ten. I would suggest the standard, a rock solid example of the craft, is Bombay Sapphire.
I don't drink vodka, unless you are buying, but I found some of your posts very educational.
If what some of you say about the manufacture of vodka is true, why not just by Everclear or another straight pure grain alcohol, the cheaper the better, and then water it down yourself? A pint becomes a quart real fast.

My understanding is that part of the cost of "premium" vodkas is they are distilled numerous times. Some advertise as many as five distillations. The more times a spirit is distilled, the purer the alcohol produced, as in fusils and cogeners are greatly diminished. These are the things that taste bad and cause hangovers.
If you come to Dallas, I'd be happy to buy you a fifth. Actually, maybe you should buy me one because that little insane kitten I got from you is driving me to drink. [:o)]

its all about the ingredients and the process by which the final product is assembled.
good grain(or good potatoes), clean artesian water, multiple distillations etc.
if you're mixing it with something, then it rarely matters the quality of the vodka(within reason), especially three or four deep.
i usually drink it straight, either up or on the rocks. granted, after three or four the nuances of different vodkas become blurry(as does my sight), but those first two or so i can tell you with a high degree of accuracy what the vodka is.

As did I.

For a cheap potato based vodka, I like Monopolova from Austria. It's about $13 a liter.
If someone else is buying, I like Chopin. [:D]

Otherwise it's blended whiskey.
