My brother just made his first purchase on an online auction. He made the winning bid, emailed the seller to find out what shipping costs would be, four days later the seller notifies him the amount, my brother immediately makes payment via pay pal. Ten days later he has not received merchandise, emails the seller. The seller resonds, saying as stated, the merchandise would go out 10-14 days after payment clears- THE SELLER SAID IT TOOK 6 DAYS FOR HIS PAYPAL PAYMENT TO CLEAR. I have PAID using paypal, and I was under the impression that the payment is IMMEDIATELY placed in the sellers bank account. That is the main reason I have used paypal-so that payment is received immediately, and I dont have to wait for a personal check to be received by seller, and then have to clear.
Is this guy jerking my brothers chain? Is there a waiting period for payment to "clear" when using paypal, or is it as I understood, payment is IMMEDIATE? Thanks for any help.

When you sign in to paypal, one of the options next to overview is withdraw. You can do a bank transfer, request a check, or have it added to your paypal credit card.

they also charge a small fee to do a transfer to your bank account. Sending money is free. Receiving it will cost you the fee.

if you're smart, you have a paypal debit card. then its just as simple as going to the atm and taking the money out at your convenience instead of waiting days for a wire transfer or weeks for a paper check.

A wire transfer with Paypal usually takes under two hours to appear in my bank acct.

Merchant refunds my money, lets say for this demonstration:

If I paid through the PayPal system using my CC, the merchant simply credits my card.

If I paid through the PayPal system using the wire transfer directly from my bank account, the merchant credits my PayPal account. If this is the case..

..then I simply transfer the money from my PayPal account back into my checking account. And, yes, it takes, on average, about two days.

But, my goal is to maintain Zero balance in my PayPal account.

[Procedures above] is what I have been using for years. Best, Joe

OK. I use my debit card to make purchases with Paypal. Is that all the info they need for a refund. Or will I have to give them the routing number etc.

    Limited background, here...

Do you have a PayPal account? That's what I assumed (bad move on my part) when I posted.

If you are using your debit card, just make sure the checking account number, and the routing number is on file with them. That's the key to transfers..and you will be free from having to use your debit card ever again in the future, as all the transactions you pay for will automatically come out of your checking account..(unless you specify using your Credit Card that's on file with PayPal).

The refund comes from the merchant selling you the goods. PayPal is only an intermediary. Refer to my first post

    Best again, Joe

Interesting. They've always taken a few days for me. I wonder...
