So...does anyone suggest any kind of break in for CMP M-1 Garands? I know that new rifles bought from the factory due but with these rifles I figured you may not need to? What says the peanut gallery?[:D]

oh yeah and Mark if you want to chime in I'm ok with that to.[;)]

Neither of mine needed a break in....I like to believe that their break in period consisted of picking off a few fascists or commies during the wars (WWII and Korea).

[:D]I'm sure they all were broken in several thousand rounds ago. [:D] UNLESS you somehow luck out and get one that was newly rebarreled just before they coated it with cosmoline and packed it away. But, figure the odds on that. [:D]

They do sell M1's with brand new barrels; CMP Special grade.

Unless you bought one of the new production rifles from the CMP which had brand new barrels there was some grunt that took care of breaking your rifle in, probably long before I was born (1960). Even the brand new CMP M1s are not sold as match rifles but are simply service rifles and are intended to shoot right out of the box without a dedicated break in period. Heating up the barrel is what causes most wear so just take it easy on the rapid fire...And with today's ammo prices that should not be too tough!

M1 rifles were stored dry, not covered in cosmoline, when in US arsenals. Some were vacuum packed individually, but many were just piled in wood crates. The only M1 rifles packed in cosmoline were the Greek lend lease rifles.

M1 rifles, new & rebuilt, were always test fired, usually indicated by the proof P stamped on the stock, & the P or punch mark stamped on the barrel.

Only those with warning whistles on their vehicle front bumper need to break in a rifle barrel, & both are done for the same reason: they will protect you from being attacked by wild elephants.

break in a rifle that was barreled in the 50's and has likely been shot by dozens of soldiers in two or three armies? surely you jest.
