What brand 7.62x39 have you had the best luck with? There is some Barnaul on sale for $2.99 a box for 20 but I would hate to have bad ammo put a mar on the rifles first impression.Thanks.

I bought a s***load of Norinco steel-cased non-corrosive a while back, and I haven't had any problems with it. I've got enough here to start a small insurrection, so I won't be buying any of the current stuff anytime soon. Sorry. I don't know if you can still get this North China stuff or not, but it's just fine if you can find it.

The VAST majority of the ammo coming out of Russia's ammo factories now is non-corrosive and a good buy for the money.

Personally, I use 7.62x54R Barnaul soft-point boattails ($5.50/20rds)in my Mosin-Nagant, and 7.62x39R Klimovsk FMJs and JHPs ($19.99/120 rnd. brick) in my SAR-1. You can tell it's Klimovsk if it comes in an unremarkable white boxes with a logo that looks something like a teardrop inside of a square with a dot in the middle.

Russian ammo factories makers have long since made the transition to exportable hunting ammo, so unless it's true Cold-War era milsurp ammo, it's almost certainly not corrosive.

Wolf ammo is made in Russia as well, yet they seem to be trying to market it as a superior breed. As far as I can tell, it's the same ammo for a greater price. Barnaul and Klimovsk have always shot straight and clean for me.

Everything I've used has worked reliably.

I like the Wolf Copper Jacketed bullets; I'm not sure if it really is less harsh than the copper-plated bimetal (steel) cased, but at the appoximate same price, I figure it won't hurt to use it--especially if I'm using it in my Mini-30's.

Wolf is the way to go for cheap shooting. I bought 500 rds. of Wolf for $38 at a gun show reciently. And let me assure you it will go through a deer, tresspasser, commie or U.N. "peace keeper"

I've found that Wolf brand ammo is *at least* as accurate as my #2 grade Russian SKS can shoot. It groups great and the cost won't kill you.

Most of the commie bloc 7.62 ammo will shoot as good as the sks can. Be advised that even though it is hollow point, the copper-clad steel jacket bullet will penetrate about the same as a fmj. I've seen it whiz right through 3/8" plate swingers at 100 yds. Some ranges don't like that sort of thing. Also it is quite prone to ricochet.

If you think that's bad, try some with a steel core. It's been known to spark and start grass fires at outdoor ranges.

That was scary! Come to think of it Offereor has not posted here in about 5 months, does anyone know whatever happened to Steve? He always seemed to have lot of projects/plans/schemes going on so maybe he finally struck it rich and forgot about his poorer relations here on GB.

I've got a couple of cases of the cheap stuff from Norinco and about a half case from Jing An Equipment IMP/EXP. Norinco shoots about 4" groups with my scoped Norinco SKS. Jung An stuff shoot 6" groups. I have also got about 10 boxes left of olin/winchester(q3174) that consistently shoots 2" groups that I am saving for whenever I have to actually shoot the SKS seriously. Most of the time I'm just bustin caps with this rifle and I have better weapons for more important jobs than just sending the lead down range. I think that the US made ammo will always function better and shoot more consistently, at about twice the price.

I've never really had a problem with any mfg of 7.62x39 ammo. Perhaps that's because SKS's and AK's are meant to function with about any junk you can throw in it. LOL!

I just bought 2000 rounds of Wolf FMJ for $157, including shipping. Barnaul at $2.99 a box is no bargain. We buy Wolf at the local gun shop for $2.49, and Barnaul is usually cheaper when I can find it.
