My wife is from Belarus, and I have been there many times. One of the deacons in her home church was in the army when the Chernobyl accident happened. His unit was sent in to clean up the reactor. In 2001, he told that he was the only surviving member of his unit. All of the others have died as a result of exposure to radiation. He gives glory to God that he is healthy with no effect from being exposed to the radiation.

Many people (especially children) died from leukemia as a result of being exposed to the radiation.

Years ago, there was a good article (National Geographic, maybe?) about the helicopter pilots that air lifted the concrete slabs and lowered them onto the melting reactor.
They all knew it was a suicide mission, and they volunteered and flew anyway. Everyone of them died shortly within days of flying.

Several years back there was a Utube vid of a European woman touring Chernobyl on a motor cycle. Looked much like a ghost town all right.

For an update, just check Iran post-Obama agreement. Does anyone really think Iran's adversaries will allow them to build nuclear weapons? The various countries will have to "take a number" for their turn to arrange "an accident".
