Plague = Progress?

I saw part of a History Channel program recently that presented a viewpoint that the Great Plague that killed about half of Europes population was the primary factor leading to the ending of the "Dark Ages" and the beginning of the Renaissance. The reasons given were: prior to the plague agricultural production could not keep up with the amount of people, requiring all people to farm for basic grains and perpetuating the Landlord-Serf society. Following the plague there were less people, so less people eating, but the same amount of land, so fewer people produced slightly less food, but the food production per person was higher; this allowed diversification into other crops as well as artisanship such as metalurgy, scientific endeavor, etc.
So, do you agree/disagree? With all the talk of a super epidemic flu potentially killing millions- what do you think the long term result would be?
