LEO's..... question.....

Do you need any reason to run a wants and warrants search along with tag and registration info? Do many leos spend the day driving around calling for this info on random cars?

Just asking because I have heard my plate number and name on the scanner when in town.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.

We dont need a reason to run a vehicle. Its common to check for validity of tags and insurance, not to mention the occasional stolen car. And yes if something draws a persons attention they will check out the vehicle.

Okay was just curious. Grew up in a town of 800 and every time I go to the bank it seems like they run my truck for info. Guess they dont have a lot to do. [8D]

I run my checks on the MDT. When I do that, there is no radio traffic for scannerland to hear.

As mentioned, police don't need a reason to 'run' plates. In fact a some police agencies now have cars equiped with cameras facing each direction that automatically run every plate they pass and notify the officer of anything 'wrong' with the registration.

    Dave,
Small towns are notorious for looking at folks they dont recognize, well at least around here. Its just the natural of the beast, and its really a good thing, it shows that they are paying attention and looking out for the folks. Also I have found certain vehicles draw attention by the way they look.

I didn't want to hear that stuff anyway, so there. [:p] Unfortunately the potentially cool channels are encrypted though. [:(]

Well you would think a town with all of 4 LEO's would remember my truck. It is solid blue with a matching topper and is in town 2-3 days per week. [8D]

I assume they call the dispatch because they have old equipment. I have family that call me when they run the W/W search.

When I was younger I drove a metallic blue 1950 Chevy 2 door. Even growing up in town and driving the car each day they ran my info. Guess they were waiting for the time I had unpaid tickets. [:D]

At least if it gets stolen it would be quickly detected... Of course it will probably go out of town before the next search is done.

Random checks of the license plates of vehicles in traffic or parked is not an intrusion to someones liberty if they are not stopped or contacted, so no, they do not need a reason.

One of the older guys that live out here on the ranch loaned his old beat up Bronco to the landlords grandson to get to work. He got puilled over because they didn't recognize him as the normal driver of it.

The owner and the young man were ok with the fact the cops were looking out for the owner.

    Dave,
They are just probably trying to figure out who ya are, you are so suspicious looking, or you have a truck like someone they keep an eye on[8D]

My mother lives in a tiny, landlocked community within another, much larger city. A few years ago, the PD there came up with an idea. All residents of the tiny town were issued stickers to put on the back windows of their cars, identifying them as residents. This let the cops know who lives here and who does not. In order to get the sticker, you had to sign an agreement with the PD, allowing them to stop that car for no reason, if it were rolling after a certain hour.

I think the program died. I didn't ask Mom about it, but her new car doesn't have a sticker, and her old car didn't have one when I bought it from her.

Had a guy a couple of towns over that looked like me and me like him. Got me stopped 3 times in a felony stop. (talk about scaring you) He is now in jail for murder so most of the time I can relax when in a car.

I've wondered this myself. About a month ago my wife called me and wanted to know if got a ticket because she heard an officer run my plates on her scanner. My pickup was parked in the same spot along the street as it is every day while I am at work. This is about 1-1/2 blocks from the police station in a town of about 7000. I called the PD and asked why, the dispatcher couldn't/wouldn't give me an answer.
