Men's Suits are SO expensive!

I swear.....I thought it was about time we bought our son an actual suit. He has his high school year this year, so I wanted nice pictures for the yearbook and there are guaranteed to be several events that it might come in handy, plus it might actually fit him for a while before he outgrows it (hopefully.)

I found a nice jacket on sale at Joseph A Banks for $99 and the shirts were on sale. The guy ringing us up helped me discount the two pairs of pants we got.

I'll never EVER get used to buying shirts without trying them on. Pulling out these folded shirts and laying ties on them look wonderful together, but you still just feel funny not trying it on.

Altogether, we got out of there with two pants, two shirts a tie and jacket for a little more than $500.

Shopping for the girls isn't this bad!

I hope my son grows up to be successful and happy.....but I'll be in trouble if this boy needs a bunch of suits!

A number of years ago I bought into the Buy One, get Three Free program.

Spent $ 1,500.00 for one suit, and got three more that listed for around $ 1,200.00 each for nothing.

Doubt I'll have to buy a suit again. Even got a black one to my funeral.[:)]

KASEY, JAB had the whole suit on sale last week for $99. You just have to wait for their sales. They always put suites on sale, 4 for one price. Nobody needs 4 suits but it does show how much they mark their stuff up. Tom

I have a few suits- that last one I bought was at a shop in New Orleans, just before Katrina. It was $900 which is the most I've spent on a suit- but a few of my friends' wives spend more than that on their shoes. Now, those are expensive!!

Shopping for girls compared to boys is like the tides of the ocean.....girls shopping is like the waves, a constant thing, never ending, relentless. Whereas boys are the random tidal wave that blows you away out of nowhere!

when I was growing up I couldn't get my mom to spend 30 bucks on me for a pair of jeans, let alone $500. that would have been unimaginable. like having Wonder Mom.

I think you can expect him to grow out of them in 4 years or less. shirt first, then pants, then jacket. so when (or if) you buy more clothes you may invest less in shirts and pants, and more on another jacket.

he won't use them often but when he needs it, he's going to need it. a young man must have a suit of clothes.

At age 76 I was accepted as a Congressional intern, as part of my senior year at college. I had to wear coat and tie during the office hours. I was able to buy 3 piece suits, sport coats, dress trousers, white shirts, and multiple colors of ties. People coming into the office thought that I was a lawyer. Having said that, all the clothes that I wore were bought in thrift shops. Typical prices were like, $15 for a suit, 3 to 5 for a sport coat, trousers 5, ties 50 cents, white shirts 2 to 5. Right now I have about 10 to 15 suits in my closet along with other clothes to go along with them.

    I couldn't agree more.

If he hasn't learned already, make him learn how to tie a necktie.

If you don't know how, here's the best video I've seen on it....it doesn't hurt that the girl is easy on the eyes.

how to tie a tie. instruction leaflet from a tie shop.

the most common method is the Half Windsor. they all look complicated but hands-on practice makes it second nature.

[:D][:D][:D] I do hope he ends up going places that require that you dress nicer from time to time. I have done my best to take my three out a little so they knew the difference between going to a Broadway show and going to the movies. I miss the days of men dressing nice in nicer places. Its the women too....but when you are surrounded by men in suits you know you should carry yourself a little better and be a little more on alert.

It just hacks me off to no end to go to a nice place to eat and see people wander in dressed like they were going to some red neck hoe down. Pappadeaux's is a nicer Cajun type place near here and they have a great atmosphere, wonderful food and the people who work there are all trained very well on how to serve and make a diner appreciate what they have. The last time we were there I saw a guy in a nasty t-shirt, baseball hat walk by and his teenage daughter was wearing shorts that were so tiny I guarantee she didn't have panties on. I shot the mom a dirty look and from the look I got back she knew exactly what my problem was. She looked pretty embarrassed. Maybe next time she will try to teach her group a little respect and manors.

You got off easy - try adding good shoes to the shirts and suit.

A good suit and quality shoes will last a long time. I have some Edward Green, Churchs and John Lobb made shoes that have beeen with me for about 20 years. Allen Edmonds and Alden are pretty good too. But when you buy good stuff use the Cary Grant rule and don't buy anything too fashionable because after a while it will look dated.

When I worked for the Prudential I felt sorry for the IBM CE. When he had to work under the floor tiles he came out looking like a boiler tender. He said he got a clothing allowance but it wasn't enough to cover his shirts.

My pity for him was mitigated a bit by the fact I was getting paid twice what I was worth and he was making twice as much as I was. He saved a fortune on laundry. [;)] [:D]

Kasey, next time just take him to Chico's and buy him a dress[;)][:D][:D][:D]Scratch that, there to expensive, try walmart..

Seriously, I went to a place called Zanes western outfitters and bought three great suits for less then what you paid and they are top quality. Joseph A Banks does have some of the best brand suits and great prices. Guess i haven't looked there lately. Every young man his age needs a couple of suits for different events. Tell him to take good care of them and they will last many years. Good job MOM and I am proud of you.

Find a good tailor. There's a world of difference between dress clothing that fits right and clothing that almost fits right.
Mens' jackets HAVE to fit right.
Two suits didn't cut it in my time and it was worse for women who spent their entire salaries on their wardrobes.
Sport jackets can look well with a variety of slacks.
There used to be a saying "Clothing makes the man."
I found it to be true.
Also, shined shoes are important if they are smooth leather.
My father was an old Victorian Englishman and insisted that was the first impression a man gives.

always thought a tie was a phallic symbol that was socially acceptable to flaunt openly....not interested in wearing a suit either, though there may still be one way in the back of somewhere

I spent my time working on Mahogany Row, and had to dress well every day because I never knew when I might be interviewed on TV. Had quite a few suits back then.

I've lived in casual clothes since then, with "dress up" being grey slacks and a navy blazer. Every once in a while, I'll see a suit in a store that I simply have to have, but that's rare. Still have a few classic ties out of the dozens I once had.

The problem I have now is that I buy a suit, wear it once or maybe twice (two years apart) and then find that the damn things shrink in the closet. Dunno how that happens...
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

When he went to prom last year we bought him a nice pair of brown shoes that are nice looking, but not "flashy"...so they work with his new purchases. I'm surprised they still fit him. He has been a size 12 shoe for two years straight now. Maybe this is where his feet will stay (please!) It was too funny.....two years ago he went to prom with one of my daughter's friends. He had no interest in going to the prom, but got asked several times every day by girls that didn't have anyone to go with. He said no to all of them, but couldn't tell the friend no. He didn't even go to his own prom last year. I bet I have to MAKE him go this year....which is IS going, its his senior year! (I know.....I shouldn't, but I just want the goofy prom pictures!)

You can see the shoes in this pic...

"fishkiller41", I liked school very well, liked the competition with the younger students. The only difference between us was I was serious in my studies and carried a 4.0 average into the third year where I dropped 2 "B"s.
