So tell me about ankle holsters...

Thinking I may try one with my Colt Cobra. I have only looked at a couple and they seemed so bulky I couldn't imagine wearing them. Is that the nature of the beast or was I looking at the wrong ones? Any experience? Suggestions?

They go terrible with cargo shorts and sandals.

Galco makes a good one. I've used one for years on duty and off.

Galco would be a go to brand. I'd only consider it for a backup gun, not a primary. You'll never be able to draw it fast enough.

I tried one once but cannot remember the brand. Uncomfortable, made me itch, would not stay in place unless super tight and that added to the discomfort, need to wear loose fitting slacks not jeans. For me an ankle holster is a no go.

Crossbreed makes a nice one. So does Galco.

Whatever you do, get one with a calf support strap. The goofy little ones that just wrap around your ankle will just be the baggiest sock you ever had on.

They are great for when wearing a jacket won't work.

I carried an AMT back-up .380 in an Uncle Mikes ankle holster for years and never had it come loose or let go of said firearm. This was on duty and in uniform. Say what you want amount those holsters, Uncle Mikes, but they work. I did hang one in a fence i was trying to jump over and luckily the stitches gave way which i believe saved me from a nasty twisted or busted ankle.

I have a leather loop sewn on the inside of my boots. Although a little slow to access, I've never had a problem with any of the boots I had altered. Pants fit over the boot and weapon is protected and completely out of sight.

I've tried to wear them on several occasions for work. They are uncomfortable, not necessarily easy to access, and vulnerable in a physical confrontation.

no where to run baby no where to hide......shorts and sandals/sneakers 80% of the year isn't conducive to ankle holsters

They work fine and last about ten years or so.
Always get one with the band on the outside of the holster so it draws the weapon closer to your ankle.

The ones with the holster hanging off the outside of the band like a belt holster cause all kinds of problems with snagging on stuff. I had to rework and resew my last one to get it right.

20 years of LE and the Galco Ankle Glove is the only one I would ever buy or wear. Best one.

Popeye Doyle liked the ankle holster.

He wore it on the outside of his ankle, I thought it was supposed to go to the inside

I have never tried one and I have no experience with them but I have heard that the Galco Ankle Glove is a good one.

I found them to be uncomfortable and if you're carrying a nice blued gun the constant movement of the gun in the holster as you walk will wear the finish off of the gun in places. You will also be surprised at how much dirtier a gun will get down on your ankle as opposed to being in your pocket or in a holster on your body some where else.

I used one for years in an environment that was not conducive to other carry methods(at that time, there weren't any IWB holsters on the market). I was young and athletic so could easily reach the holster and the situation was such that I most likely would have a buffer between me and the threat for at least a few seconds to allow for the slower draw.
There's the "heart attack" draw in which you fall to the ground feigning a heart attack, curl into a fetal position, and then draw. Gets your clothes messy but might work if needed.

I've thought about an ankle holster before... But shelved the idea.
With my size and bad back, reaching my ankle is tough to do.

    The ankle holster was the feature article in the last GunBroker Newsletter. Here's a video that was with the article;
