Mary Johanna Gawenda, 39, of Eugene, has what appear to be non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a Portland hospital Thursday afternoon for burn treatment. She had been reported missing on March 10 by a family member, police said.

This all started just after noon. A witness says he called 9-1-1 for a speeding car on I-105 near Pioneer Parkway.

He says the car was going at least 85 miles per hour, and he says the driver inside was trying to light herself on fire.

Police say the vehicle crashed into the guardrail on the Washington-Jefferson Street Bridge, just above the skate park, and rolled before coming to stop. That's when witnesses say Gawenda jumped out of the car, on fire, and ran down the bridge.

Police say several people tried to stop her, but she jumped over the side, landing 40 feet below.

"Look up and there's smoke and everyone is running from the skate park over to the grass. You could see cars pulling over. You could see people getting out of their cars, walking down quite always down the bridge," said witness Tom Snyder.

Nurses and staff from nearby Buckley House ran to help Gawenda before paramedics arrived.

Police say a 40-year-old woman who was below the bridge was hit by falling debris from the bridge. That person was transported to the hospital for a precautionary evaluation.

Police say drivers stopped to help, including a few truck drivers who used their own fire extinguishers to douse the flames inside the car.
