PARKERSBURG - With the recovery Tuesday night of four rifles abandoned on the side of Dutch Ridge Road, police said all the guns stolen from the Veterans Museum of the Mid-Ohio Valley have been found.
The recovery of the guns is a victory for the police department and the community, but those responsible for the Dec. 21 breaking and entering of the museum have not been arrested.
Several other weapons, including a Japanese World War II bayonet and 40 knives, as well as 20 battle dress uniforms, are still missing, said Gary Farris, director of the museum at 1829 Seventh St.
"I'm extremely happy with how the investigation has been handled. The detectives in this case have really been putting the pressure on these criminals, and the community has been very supportive," Farris said.
After receiving a tip Tuesday around 7:45 p.m., deputies with the Wood County Sheriff's Office discovered four rifles in a guitar case, lying on the side of the road in the 400 block of Dutch Ridge Road. The rifles were the last of the guns to be recovered, said Sgt. Greg Collins, spokesman for the Parkersburg Police Department.
One of the rifles is a replica of a Thompson machine gun, but is inoperable, said Collins.
"Detective Seth Cook met with Gary Farris of the Veterans Museum of Mid-Ohio Valley this morning following last night's recovery of four guns," Collins said Wednesday. "The two reviewed photographs and records, determining that all of the firearms have been recovered."
A technician with the Parkersburg Police Department was still gathering evidence Wednesday and searching for fingerprints on the recovered rifles.
Farris said he hopes a few of the firearms can be returned to the museum soon.
"A few of them are being used as evidence, and must stay in police custody until after the trials," said Farris. "It could be months."
Farris said he believes someone abandoned the firearms Tuesday because he knew he would not be able to sell them.
"There is just so much pressure being put on the people responsible," said Farris. "I think that's why someone dumped those guns because they knew they could never sell them here. If they got caught, they know they would be facing a felony."
The police department continues to make progress on the case.
"The investigation will continue with the goal being the arrest and conviction of those involved," said Collins.
Two men allegedly connected with the breaking and entering have been arrested in recent weeks.
William Joseph Kerns, 24, was arrested Dec. 27 for possession of stolen property after police found one firearm and two knives, items confirmed to be property stolen from the museum.
Two days later, Michael Edward Depew, 22, was arrested for transferring/receiving stolen property after police discovered he was in possession of a 9mm Beretta handgun from the museum.
