I heard on the TV this morning that Dell computer is changing their technical support service. Now when you buy a new computer you can sign up for the $13.00 per month technical support where the technician on the phone speaks English.

    What a deal!

Does anyone have a Dell Latitude/D630 puter and how's it do and how old is one? I bought one in March to use in my " Room at the HOME " and it does pretty good, faster than I am. Hadn't used any puter in years and didn't know how to move the pointer without a mouse. Found the youngest PT here and she showed me. If it ain't got a lever, knob, switch or fuel peddle it takes me awhile.

    Oh BS.

Yes, Dell does set its homepages to dell.myway.com. If the Pharmer is too stupid to change the homepage, then he needs to take a 1st-grade course in how to surf the 'Net.

I've got a Dell Dimension and an Inspiron. Took me all of a minute total to change both homepages. It also took me about the same amount of time to change the default search engines.

How do you set it back to the original address bar setting my dads computer has a search engine built into the address bar?

To set your homepage in IE:

TOOLS: INTERNET OPTIONS: first option is to change your homepage.

To set your toolbar settings in IE:

VIEW: TOOLBARS: then check and uncheck as desired.

To set your search engine in IE:

SEARCH: CUSTOM: and then choose from the list.

I certainly would not say Dell is the "best". Dell is an amazing marketing company and has some of the finest inventory / logistics / fulfillment methodologies of any industry. However, their product is typically average. A lot of their product is cost-reduced versions of Intel reference designs.

I found that to be true when I bought a laptop in Little Rock, AR, a few years
back. it just seemed to be on the verge of being a bit unwieldy and slow.

I was thinking about a DELL for my next computer, mainly because they opened the new plant in Kernersville, NC, which would be convenient for me. I guess I'll just stick with Gateway mail order.

    Admin,

Just about every PC made with an Intel processor is a knock off of an Intel reference design.

Dell systems are as good as those made by Gateway or H-P. don't kid yourself, they are all just collections of the same components. All the quality control is done by the suppliers and most of these folks buy their components from the same source ie. if you buy a PC with an Intel processor, you are probably buying an Intel motherboard.

Intel is not only the largest maker of PC microprocessors, they are also the largest motherboard supplier.

Had a Gateway with Windows ME. Computer was good, operating system was terrible. Bought a Dell 4700 with all the bells and whistles, had to upgrade memory to get any speed. Service is a pain. India.
I've got nearly $2,000.00 dollars wrapped up in that deal.

I bought a Gateway refurbished by Tiger Direct for $600.00 and it blows the wheels ofF the Dell anyday. Wish I'd never bought the Dell.

I totally agree, I have owned 3 dells and just bought the wife an Inspiron. Have had no problems at all with product or serviceaside from my hardrive taking a crap but was replaced in 2 days by an inhome tech.Sometimes it is hard to understand their customer service. Like most things, you get what you pay for......unless its a Harley[:D]stir, stir[B)] quote:Originally posted by buschmaster
set your homepage to ABOUT:BLANK so when you open your browser, you get a blank page.

I worked for Dell for 1.5 years. Their products are better than average, their prices are better than average, their support was definitely the best before all this outsourcing carp.

If you want to buy the best common OEM computer, get a Sony, but you won't get the wide selection of models or the availability of replacement parts.

If you want the best computer period, you're going to have to build it yourself.

I have owned Gateways and Dells.

I will never buy another Dell. The customer service sucks, their business practices suck and their components suck. Great marketing is their only skill and that does me no good.

Typing this on a Gateway laptop and my next computers will be Gateway.

Everyone has an opinion based on their own experience. I know Dell gets a bad rap but I use one at work and I love it. I now hate my PC at home because the Dell is so much nicer and faster.

I don't have to worry about customer support though. If I have a problem all I have to do is make a phone call or send an email to our technical guru and blamo, in 5 or 6 weeks it gets fixed! [:D]

Best Bet with a Dell laptop is to swap out the cheapo Fujitsu hard drive for a larger Western Digital, exchange the RAM with a matched set of DDR or SD (minimum 512MB), and install a good copy of XPsp2.
The tech service bites unless you demand a senior tech; and when you get him, demand a senior tech supervisor. Most of them are in Ogden, for reasons I still can't fathom.

A friend builds computers for resale out of Dells and Gateways; they run faster than the originals and cost 1/3 the price, configured for whatever use you specify.

We have about 175 Dell servers and 250 Dell workstations deployed. Our only major problems with the workstations have been with the SX series small form factor desktops and their mobos frying all the time. Laptops - no issues. We only buy the Optiplex desktops and Latitude laptops -- I'm sure if we bought the Dimension/Inspiron line we would have more pain.

On the server side, the only problem has been the cheap imbedded Broadcomm NICS -- and this has only been a problem on certain servers that really get worked. Of course, thats why Dell offers the option of ordering high-quality Intel NICs. The plastic bezels on the newer servers irk me, too. Tech support has only been a problem with our Dell-branded EMC SANs.

In servers one manufacturer stands head and shoulders above the rest: IBM. IBM builds it own chipsets and designs its own systems. They are faster, more reliable, and more feature-rich than any other Intel-based servers

With the good luck we (GunBroker) have had with IBM servers I decided to buy an IBM desktop. Like the servers it is fast and reliable and has some cool features.

    I highly recommend IBM

IBM is the gold standard for computer hardware. How much does an IBM system cost compared to a Dell or a Gateway? I wouldnt be surprised to find out IBM systems cost 25% to 30% more, unless you buy a hundred of them, which is the only way to get your money out of IBM(by being a corporate customer)

IBM (big joke). IBM cannot make up their mind what segment of the computer market they want. Owned 2 IBM PC's several years ago. Paid over $300.00 for a IBM scanner when scanners were first introduced. Shortly thereafter, IBM decided to drop their PC line. No more support, no updated drivers available, no nothing. Ended up with a brand new IBM scanner with absolutely "no" drivers or software available to work with WindowsXP.

$300.00 IBM scanners selling on eBay for $5.00 to $10.00 but, couldn't use with WinXP. Mine ended up in the trash.

You can have IBM----I'll take my two Dell's anytime.

I have a Dell that is about 11 months old now and it is a fine computer. Dell of course is just a brand name, none of the internal hardware is made by them, my memory stick went out on mine in month 7 and when I removed it to replace I found it was the cheapest memory to be found. I put in a Kingston memory stick, can't go wrong there. Really there isn't much difference in brands because every dealer will build them as cheap as possible.

This link is to just one of the 24 refurbished Gateway powerhouse PCs that Tiger Direct is presently offering:

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1576823&CatId=1875

The price is less than half of what it costs new and mine was just like new when I got it. Not one problem in more than a year.

Take a look at this one and a few more and also go to the TD home page and look at customer testimonials. I know I'm really satisfied and that's just as a customer, I don't make a dime or get any kind of compensation for this recommendation. Though this particular example has only a half gig of RAM, Tiger Direct has great sales on memory for it and you can kick it way up for very little cash.
